Leaky Bullpen Bombed by Boston

August 30th, 2018 vs Boston Red Sox

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Viera and Gomez were the crumbling tower.

Short Take:Bullpen Wastes Strong Giolito Start as Sox Fall in Game 1

After conquering the Yankees in the Bronx, the Sox looked to keep their solid stretch going at home against the best team in all of baseball. Lucas Giolito turned in one of his best performances of the season against a high powered offense he late game heroics helpled the Sox salvage one in the series this afternoon.

Avisail Garcia got the Sox going early with a booming 2 run HR to CF against former Cy Young Winner Rick Porcello. The HR went 421 feet with an exit velocity of 110.5mph according to Statcast so this was not a cheapie. Getting to sinker ballers in the 1st inning is always a good idea and the Sox continued to pile on Porcello with Matt Davidson driving home Daniel Palka for the 3rd run of the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd, the good guys would expand the lead further on a sacrifice fly from Avi Garcia for his 3rd RBI. Giolito suddenly had a comfortable 4-0 lead to work with.

Lucas Giolito was magnificent tonight. He carried a no hitter into the 5th inning and he had most of his pitches working, especially the change up which he has really refined lately. The night for Giolito ended on a 1 out walk to Brock Holt. At 113 pitches, Renteria decided not to push it. Unfortunately, the Sox are a bit thin in middle relief these days and Jeanmar Gomez was ripe for a quick strike assault from the best team in MLB. 4 quick runs went on the board and it was capped off by a 2 run shot from Mookie Betts. Giolito deserved a better fate on this one but had to settle for a no decision. Ryan Burr managed to pitch a clean 8th inning but Thyago Viera had a disasterous outing in the 9th giving up 5 ER that was punctuated by a 3 run HR by JD Martinez. Renteria used up a lot of his best bullpen options in the Yankees series and Boston is not a lineup you can coast by with your 8th man out of the bullpen.

This was an enjoyable game to watch for six innings. Giolito pitched really well against the best lineup in baseball today and that was ultimately the most important thing about the game tonight. Against a team like Boston, they will need their top bullpen options like Jace Fry and Juan Minaya if they hope to close out a couple wins this weekend. Tomorrow is the much anticipated matchup between Michael Kopech and his former organization as he takes on Nathan Eovaldi

Game Notes-

-Giolito’s line was 6.1IP, 1ER, 8K, 2BB. A great outing.

-Yolmer Sanchez was 3 for 5 with 1 run scored

-Viera and Gomez combined to allow 8ER tonight.

-Moncada finished 1 for 3 with 1BB

Fun Da Mentalz:
 At least Gio pitched well.
