WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Goose Egg

August 6 vs. N.Y. Yankees

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Chess
Despite a couple of nice moments, this game was way too difficult.

Short Take: The White Sox are unable to extend their winning streak as the Yankees run roughshod over them.

Less than 24 hours before the White Sox played Monday at Guaranteed Rate Field, their opponents, the New York Yankees, suffered perhaps their most devastating loss of the season when they blew a late lead against the Boston Red Sox and lost, giving the Carmines a four-game sweep and a commanding lead in the American League East. The Pale Hose hoped the Pinstripes would be devastated enough to not have anything to give in the series opener. Instead, the Bronx Bombers showed why they're firmly in the playoff race. They put their bad weekend at Fenway Park behind them and shut out the White Sox, 7-0.

Dylan Covey appeared to be in control, retiring the first 10 Yankees hitters. But with one out in the fourth inning, a Giancarlo Stanton walk and Didi Gregorius double set up back-to-back RBI singles from Gleyber Torres and Aaron Hicks. New York had a 2-0 lead, and it nearly became 5-0 at that moment courtesy of a three-run homer from Greg Bird. Instead, Adam Engel made a perfectly timed circus catch that became a candidate for defensive play of the year and temporarily prevented further damage.

Covey resumed his struggles in the fifth, giving up back-to-back singles to Kyle Higashioka and Brett Gardner. Both scored on a wild pitch and Gregorius single, respectively. Covey lasted 6 1/3 innings, but watched the deficit increase the eighth as Thyago Vieira surrendered three more runs on homers from Torres and Neil Walker. On the bright side, he also got to watch Matt Davidson pitch a scoreless ninth that included a strikeout of Stanton.

Offensively, the Sox had no answers for Lance Lynn, who was making his first for the Yankees but his third against the Sox this season. His previous two outings as a member of the Minnesota Twins seemed to help as he struck out nine on two hits and one walk over 7 1/3 innings. Yolmer Sanchez tried to give the Sox a run by doubling to lead off the ninth. But he never got further than third as A.J. Cole retired the rest of the Sox in order to end the game.

The Sox had a season-high four-game winning streak entering this game after sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays on the road this past weekend. But any joy we experience with this team never lasts, hence the abrupt crashes back to reality. That happens with a struggling offense and rotation mostly put together to eat innings. Teams like the Yankees love to face teams like the Sox because they know going into the series they have almost no chance of losing it.

Here's hoping for better luck Tuesday. Reynaldo Lopez gets the ball against CC Sabathia, starting at 7:10. The law of averages says the Sox will win at least one game in this series, right? Why not have it happen with this latest chance?
