Palka Powers Sox Past KC

August 2nd, 2018 vs Kansas City Royals

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Reynaldo had it today.

Short Take:Lopez rebounds for strong outing and Palka bails out Cedeno for Sox victory

The Sox were looking to stave off a sweep at the hands of the lowly KC Royals and the good guys turned to the struggling Reynaldo Lopez to get himself and the team back on track. A solid return to form by Lopez and some timely home runs late in the game were just what the doctor ordered. The late game heroics helped the Sox salvage one in the series this afternoon.

Lopez successfully nursed a 2-0 Sox lead for most of the game. The lead runs came courtesy of an RBI single from Narvaez and an RBI double from Tim Anderson. According to Sox beat reporter Scott Merkin, Lopez had been suffering from a lack of concentration in recent outings and apparently, Lopez himself was the one to call attention to this. In any case, Lopez fired off 7 quality innings this afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field so it is great to see him shake off whatever was ailing him. He got himself into a jam in the 8th inning allowing a double to Escobar and a single to Mondesi. This ended the day for Lopez and he turned it over to the bullpen.

Jace Fry successfully retired the next two hitters but Xavier Cedeno was summoned to get the 3rd out and unfortunately served up a 3 run tater to Whit Merrifield which gave the Royals a 3-2 lead. All was not lost! The Royals bullpen is bad too! In the bottom of the 8th, Jose Abreu tied the game with a solo dinger. This was the 17th of the season for Pito. A double for Avi Garcia and an unusual IBB to Omar Narvaez, set the table for more late inning heroics. Rick Renteria then pressed the pinch hit Palka button and it produced a 3 run blast to right center field giving the Sox a 6-3 lead. The Royals tacked on a run in the 9th but it was not enough as the Sox held on to win 6-4.

Other than the bullpen blowing the game briefly and Moncada struggling a bit today, this was a good win for the Sox. Lopez needed this one bad and if concentration issues were indeed the problem for him, he seemed to really bear down and focus today. Sometimes we forget these guys are human and might be having problems away from the field. Hopefully, he has put whatever issues were distracting him in his rearview mirror and he can put together a strong finish to the season. Also, Daniel Palka might be a piece for the rebuild going forward if he keeps up his power barrage. The Sox will head to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Rays next as Gioilito takes on Stanek in the opener.

Game Notes-

-Reynaldo’s line was 7.0IP, 2ER, 4K, 2BB. A solid start.

-Daniel Palka’s 3 run HR was his 16th HR of the season.

-Jose Abreu’s 8th innning HR was his 17th of the season.

-Moncada finished 0 for 4 with 4Ks. Not a good day.

Fun Da Mentalz:
It was great to see Reynaldo return to form.
