Rodon’s Star Burns Brighter

July 24 at Los Angeles Angels

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Mr. Rodon did it, on the mound, with the slider.

Short Take: Long-touted future ace Carlos Rodon takes no-hitter into the 7th; with a little help from the hit men, the Sox beat the Angels 4-2.

Yaaawwwnnn…Dang these west coast games anyways. But this one was worth staying up for!

If you like watching really good pitching performances, and you went to bed early last night, sorry to say that you missed one– and hooray, it was presented by our very own Carlos Rodon. Rodon’s wicked slider fooled many Angels hitters and he attacked the zone, surviving some questionable non-strike calls without losing his head. He struck out 8, walked 2 and gave up only 2 hits.

The Sox got to Angels starter Fernando Pena in the 2nd inning. Tim Anderson singled and advanced to 2nd, beating out an attempted double play when Adam Engel grounded to short. Yoan Moncada grounded deep to shortstop, also hustling and beating out the throw, advancing Anderson to 3rd. Yolmer Sanchez walked. With bases loaded, Perez was rattled and went 2-0 to Jose Abreu. Abreu gave us a brief thrill when a longball went just a few feet foul of giving the Sox a 4-0 lead. But, Perez walked him, and the Sox led 1-0. Avisail Garcia followed up with a sac fly that scored Moncada to give the Sox a 2-0 lead.

In the 6th, Avisail Garcia’s defense preserved the no-hitter, when he made a nice running catch right off the top of the grass of Kohl Calhoun’s short fly ball. Rodon walked David Fletcher, and then Andrelton Simmons broke up the no-hitter with a bloop single to center. Engel threw to 3rd in an attempt to get Fletcher. Failing that, Yolmer Sanchez saw Simmons taking too big of turn and fired to Abreu and 1st, who put the tag on to end the inning.

Moncada extended the Sox’s lead with a solo home run in the 7th, and in the 8th Matt Davidson doubled and then scored on a Nicky Delmonico single.

Rondon kept baffling hitters through the 8th. At around 100 pitches, he gave up a leadoff double to Ian Kinsler, but then retired the next two. After Rodon walked Calhoun, Ricky Renteria lifted the reluctant Rodon for Juan Minaya - who belongs in ChiSoxGal85’s “not one of my favorite Sox pitchers” club. I groaned. Could Minaya get out one hitter without damage?

Nope. A Fletcher double made it 4-1. Minaya then drilled Simmons in the hand, and his reward for that was to face Mike Trout with bases loaded. Fortunately, after a lengthy at-bat, Trout walked, which was almost a relief. Since Minaya was ineffective (again), Renteria called on Jeanmar Gomez to get that last out, which he did.

Joakim Soria closed out the 9th, despite a mild threat from an Ian Kinsler double and then Superhero Shohei Ohtani was brought in to pinch hit – but he flew out to center.

Great pitching by Carlos Rodon, supported by enough offense from his teammates, made for a fun game to watch.

The Sox play the Angels tomorrow at 9:07 CST; James Shields vs. Tyler Skaggs.
