Walking Away With a Loss

June 28th, 2018 vs Minnesota Twins

WSI Playdate Funtime:

It's boggling we couldn't score more than 1 run in 13 innings.

Short Take:Sox offense dormant as they fall to Twins in extras on a bases loaded walk

The Sox had a rare opportunity to sweep a team this afternoon as Lucas Giolito locked horns with high fastball specialist Jake Odorizzi and the Twins. It seems like Odorizzi always seems to pitch pretty well against our Sox and today was no different. Lucas Giolito was up to the task today but unfortunately, the Sox fell in extra innings in what turned into a pretty frustrating loss.

I did not have the opportunity to watch the entire game live today but it had to be quite a chore to sit through with so many blown chances. Lucas Giolito started off shaky and loaded the bases with 3 walks in the 1st inning. He managed to pitch his way out of trouble with an Adrianza to pop out to Tim Anderson. Earlier in the year, Gio probably would have let this inning snowball into an awful start. However, he has been pitching better of late, especially with Kevan Smith behind the dish.

Jake Odorizzi kept the Sox offense in check with his standard array of high fastballs and low sinkers. Fortunately, Giolito was pretty good today too keeping the Twins off the board until a Logan Morrison HR in the 7th gave the Twins a 1-0 lead. It felt like this one was heading for a 1-0 loss, but Twins closer Fernando Rodney was abysmal in the 9th. After recording 2 quick outs, he gave up a single to Sanchez, plunked Tim Anderson, walked Charlie Tilson, and then walked pinch hitter Daniel Palka on 4 pitches. Moncada had a chance to end the game but unfortunately struck out on a fastball looking. If there is one big hole in Moncada’s game right now, it might be that he is too selective. After blowing a few more late chances in extras, the game would drag on into the 13th inning where the Sox bullpen finally gave way. Santiago got himself into a jam and then could not find the K zone. He walked 3 straight batters, one intentional, and one with the bases loaded giving the Twins a 2-1 lead. The Sox would have no answer in the bottom of the frame and that was all she wrote.

A frustrating day at the ballpark for the South Side 9. They had plenty of opportunities today but when you go 0 for 15 with RISP in a 1 run game, you probably deserved to lose that game. If not for Rodney’s wildness in the 9th, extra innings would not have been needed. At least the Sox won the series but it would have been nice to sweep a team and extend the winning streak to 4. Iím not sure this squad has a sweep left in them this year but we shall see. On the plus side, Giolito was pretty solid today for his second straight quality start. Here is hoping Gio is about to have a big second half. The Sox will head to Arlington next for a weekend series against the Rangers. Dylan Covey will take on Yovanni Gallardo.

Game Notes-

-Lucas Giolito’s line was 6.1IP, 1ER, 3K, 4BB

-Sox offense was 0 for 15 with RISP today. Woof.

-Lucas Giolito now has a 2.90 E.R.A. with Kevan Smith as his catcher.

-Moncada finished 1 for 6 with 4Ks.
