Yolmer, Sox In It to (T)Win It

June 26 vs Minnesota Twins

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Hopscotch
Sox hopped, skipped, and jumped over the Twins.

Short Take: Yolmer Sanchez’s 4-RBI night lifts Sox over Twins in rain-delayed 8-4 victory.

Weather may have delayed the start of this game until 8:55 pm, with rain and thunderstorms in the area, but if you were patient and stayed awake for this game, you were treated to one of these occasional 2018 Sox wins that was rather enjoyable.

Initially, it looked like it might be a stormy game for Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez, when Brian Dozier led off the top of the 2nd with a home run just over the left field fence. And, déjà vu: Ehire Adrianza led off the top of the 3rd with a home run, to make it 2-0 Twins.

But the Sox got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd. Adam Engel reached on a throwing error. Then Yoan Moncada tattooed one all the way to the center field wall, scoring Engel. Then Yolmer Sanchez grounded out, allowing Moncada to score and tying the game.

In the 5th, the Twins edged ahead when they appeared to zero in on Lopez. They smacked the ball around hard with a series of singles, and Adrianza drove in another run, making it 3-2 Twins with no outs. Joe Mauer sent one a long way that Avisail Garcia tracked down against the outfield fence, but a run scored to make it 4-2 Twins.

But the door opened in the bottom of the 6th for our Sox, when they managed to load the bases mostly courtesy of Twins starter Lance Lynn. First, Lynn slipped while fielding Matt Davidson’s grounder. Then he deflected a Leury Garcia grounder away from 2nd baseman Dozier that most certainly would have been a double play, and Dozier was unable to get anyone out. Kevan Smith singled to left and that was all for Lynn. Reliever Ryan Pressly walked Tim Anderson to make it 4-3 Twins. Adam Engel struck out. Yoan Moncada popped out, hitting righty against lefty Taylor Rogers. But (and I said this out loud to no one in particular; ask my dogs): there are only a few Sox hitters that I like to see come to the plate with bases loaded and 2 outs, and Yolmer Sanchez is one of them. He took the count to 3-2 and then singled to center, scoring two and giving the Sox a 5-4 lead.

Avi Garcia extended the Sox lead by leading off the 7th with a solo home run, his first home run since returning from the DL. The Sox weren’t quite done scoring yet; in the 8th, Tim Anderson’s single was followed by an Adam Engel hit-by-pitch (in the head!). Moncada again grounded to second, but Dozier booted it, so everyone was safe. And again, Yolmer “Can We Clone Him?” Sanchez came through with a single to right, scoring Anderson. A pitching change later and Jose Abreu walked, making it 8-4 Sox, which was all that was needed as Joakim Soria closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning.

Of note:

  • Jace Fry struck out the side in the 8th.
  • Leury Garcia was 3/4.
  • Reynaldo Lopez: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 Ks.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow at 7:10; James Shields vs. Kyle Gibson.
