Crap Continues in Cleveland

June 18 at Cleveland

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Our happiness is being murdered by bad baseball.

Short Take: Dylan Covey finally has a bad start, and the White Sox pay for it with a loss.

Dylan Covey has been one of the surprises for the 2018 White Sox. The badness that was his 2017 season seems like a distant memory. But as thrilled as we've been with him lately, his nice run was going to end eventually. Enter Monday's 6-2 road loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Covey left two Cleveland runners on in the first inning, but the bottom fell out in the second. Two base hits and a Yoan Moncada error promptly loaded the bases. A mound visit did no good because those were immediately followed by a ground-rule double from Roberto Perez and a sacrifice fly from Francisco Lindor. That made it 3-0, Tribe.

Covey suffered a self-inflicted wound with the speedy Rajai Davis on first and two outs in the third. An errant pickoff throw put Davis on second, and Davis scored on Jason Kipnis' base hit to right. Kipnis added a solo homer in the fifth, and the Indians' scoring ended one inning later when Hector Santiago served a bases-loaded walk with two outs to Lonnie Chisenhall, putting the deficit at 6-0.

Meanwhile, the Sox's offense could do nothing against Trevor Bauer, who struck out eight over seven innings. Had it not been for a rain delay in the seventh, perhaps Bauer would have stayed in the game a bit longer. Then again, he already had thrown 100 pitches, so who knows how much longer Terry Francona would have stuck with him with a six-run lead? Nonetheless, the Sox were happy to get that kind of merciful assist from Mother Nature.

The Sox saw their bats come alive a little bit over the final two innings. Adam Engel was hit by Evan Marshall, Moncada had a base hit, and Yolmer Sanchez drove in Engel with his own hit. Two outs from watching his team go down, Matt Davidson decided to make it a little closer by taking Dan Otero out of Progressive Field. That was all she wrote on this game.

Not only did the pitching and lineup let the Sox down, but the defense made three errors. We've seen plenty of it all during the really bad stretches the Sox have played this season. And it seems they always follow a week or so of competant baseball before reverting back to old habits. With only the middle of June in the books, this pattern likely will repeat several times, or at least until the pending trade deadline causes the Sox to be far less talented than they already are.

If this somehow wasn't enough to drive you away from watching the Sox the rest of the season, they play again Tuesday. Carlos Rodon gets the call against Mike Clevinger, beginning at 6:10. Maybe things will be different this time. And maybe, we'll get a winter storm this coming July.

Fun Da Mentalz:
Baseball is supposed to be fun. This was not fun.
