Sox Settle For Split

June 14th, 2018 vs Cleveland Indians

WSI Playdate Funtime:
When Volstad is on the mound...

Short Take:Mike Clevenger stifles the offense as Sox settle for split

The recently improved White Sox tried to make it back to back series victories over a playoff team this week. Unfortunately, the South Siders would have to settle for a split in this one as Mike Clevenger kept the Sox offense completely in check for most of the game.

I did not have the opportunity to watch this one live due to work but I kept tabs on it and from what I saw, there was just too much Mike Clevenger in this game. He kept the Sox in check for most of 7 innings and striking out 11 White Sox batters. The only offense from the good guys was a Jose Abreu HR to RF in the bottom of the 1st inning. After that? Nada. Carlos Rodon was not economical in his outing this afternoon but he kept the Sox in it. However, his rising pitch count had him out of the game by the 5th inning. Hopefully, that control will improve as he gets more innings under his belt this year. It was a 2-2 stalemate in this game until the Tribe broke through against Chris Volstad in the Top of the 7th. Jose Ramirez did the damage with a 2 run shot. The Tribe tacked on another run in the 8th off recently recalled Juan Minaya and that would make it 5-2 Tribe which ended up being the final score. As shaky as he could be at times, the Sox will miss having Nate Jones in that 7th and 8th inning role. Juan Minaya and Chris Volstad are a far cry from the stuff Nate Jones has.

Overall, it is tough to complain about a split against a first place team. The Sox continue to hum along at a .500 ball pace in the last 30 or so games. Even the ones they are losing have been close ballgames where they have a chance to win. Hopefully, this competitive trend continues. The White Sox will open a series tomorrow against Detroit with Reynaldo Lopez opposing Mike Fiers.

Game Notes-

-Carlos Rodonís line was 5.0IP, 2ER, 4K, 3BB

-Abreu hit his 11th HR of the season. It was the only offense for the Sox.

-Moncada and Anderson were both given a rare day off today but were used in PH roles.

-Clevenger stymied the Sox offense today with 11Ks over 7.0IP.

Fun Da Mentalz:
†A split is ok I guess.
