Sox Stomp Sawx!

June 10th at Boston

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Hot Wheels
Sox were flying arund the track.

Short Take: Sox mostly do the little things as Lopez looks strong again.

Sox were in Boston to face the Sawx for the final game of a 3-game series. Both teams had sent their three best pitchers to the mound for the series, and all three games had been low scoring affairs with the teams splitting the first two. On Friday, a true pitchers duel developed with Covey eking out Sale 1-0 as his bullpen held strong for three innings. Last night both starters pitched well but Rodon's defense let him down and the Sox lost. Today, Reynaldo Lopez faced off against Rick Porcello both pitchers were solid and were charged with an unearned run, but Porcello walked one in. So, Lopez gets the win as the Sox scored two insurance runs late and went on to win 5-2.

What are you going to say about Reynaldo Lopez. He's been a completely hard luck pitcher this year and while some argue his "advanced stats" don't match with his ERA, he just keeps on going out there and pitching well enough to win in most of his starts this season. Today was no exception as he went 6.1 innings, yielding 6 hits and only one earned run while striking out 6. Once again he was the victim of an unearned run as Yoan Moncada bobbled another grounder with the bases loaded in the 7th. That came after Lopez had left the game after giving up a Pesky's Pole ground-rule double with one out. Nate Jones came in and promptly hit a batter, gave up a line drive that fortunately found a glove and walked a guy before getting yanked. Jace Fry got the call and induced the 2-out bouncer that Yoan muffed allowing a run to score and closing the Sox lead to one. Fortunately Fry then induced a fly ball to center before working a mostly stress free and scoreless 8th.

Offensively the Sox weren't getting a lot of hits, but they were making them count for the most part. Tim Anderson had no hits but managed to walk twice. The first was with the bases loaded to give the Sox a 2-1 lead. Anderson later scored on a heads-up play when he kept running from 2nd on a Trayce Thompson grounder to the right side. The Boston first baseman's throw was wide and Porcello had to reach to grab it and fell over. Thompson was out but Anderson streaked home after rounding third hard when he saw Porcello go down. His speed and a daring headfirst dive beat the throw for a crucial 3rd run at that stage of the game. It looked even more crucial after Yoan's error in the bottom of the 7th. Fortunately the Sox then went on to score two insurance runs in the 9th when Palka doubled home Moncada and Abreu. Moncada had beaten out an infield single on which he was initially called out but ruled safe on review due to a bobble by the first baseman. After Sanchez grounded out, advancing Moncada to second, Abrue was given an intentional pass to get to Palka. Palka made them pay for that mistake, doubling to the wall in deep left-center and both runners scored. That led to the final 5-2 margin of victory as Soria worked a scoreless 9th.

Sometimes a team wins by blowing the other team out. Sometimes they win with great pitching shutting the other team down. Today the Sox won by doing the little things. Tim Anderson went hitless, but scored, drove in a run, preserved the lead late with a great defensive effort and scored what would prove to the the decisive run on a heads up play. Moncada made a mistake with his fielding but later got that run back with pure hustle, beating out an infield single and then trying to steal second which prevented a double play on a chopper to second and led to Palka's 2-run double. Jace Fry didn't let the error get him down and came back to get the next batter and preserve the lead. Abreu hustled to score on Palka's double. Too often we get down on the bad things these young players are doing and it's important to point out the other side when they do something right. Today it was a mixed bag but it ended in a W and that's all that matters.

So now the Sox have won or split their last three series. With Rodon back the starters have just received a huge infusion of talent. The bullpen seems to have found something late with the revival of Soria and Jace Fry giving them a reliable lefty arm. There are obviously still problems with this team but that's to be expected as they go through the rebuild. For now they are playing much better and the results are showing in the box score. Can they continue this run of success? We'll find out starting tomorrow when the first-place Indians come to town. Lucas Giolito faces off against Carlos Carrasco and game time is at the usual time - 7:10 in Chicago. Time to get some payback for that recent sweep in Cleveland and it's always fun to put the beat-down on Cleveland. After winning a series against the Sawx in Boston that doesn't seem so far fetched anymore.
