WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Orioles Ambush Giolito

May 24th, 2018 vs Baltimore Orioles

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Giolito’s lack of control is murder.

Short Take:Giolito struggles again and Sox get drubbed by the Orioles in series finale

The Sox looked to close out what has been a mostly successful homestand on a positive note. After some recent exciting come from behind wins, the Sox unfortunately got the proverbial rake to the face in this game. The Orioles pounced on a wild Lucas Giolito and poured a bucket of ice water on the recent optimism. The Sox will unfortunately head to their charter plane for Detroit on a sour note.

I did not get the chance to watch this game live but I saw the lowlights and kept tabs on the radio while at work and I can’t say I am heartbroken for missing the bulk of it. Lucas Giolito continues to be a mechanical mess and once again struggled mightily right out of the chute in the 1st inning. Singles from Machado and Jones put Lucas in an early jam. After retiring the next batter on a fielder’s choice, Lucas then walked the next three hitters in a row. Two of these walks resulted in RBIs. I could almost feel the Don Cooper rage coming through my MLB Gameday window. It got uglier from here. An RBI single from Sisco made it 4-0 Orioles before Gio finally escaped the 1st inning. The Orioles picked up where they left off in the Top of the 2nd by greeting Giolito with back to back HRs by Mancini and Jones putting the Sox into a huge 6-0 hole. Renteria had seen enough at this point and turned to Chris Beck after only 1.1 innings pitched. According to MLB At Bat, Giolito finished with a game score of -3. Ouch.

Not a lot of positives to take out of this 9-3 loss other than a Jose Rondon 3 run HR which represented their only offense. The Sox simply had to settle for a series split and a decent 5W-3L homestand. It will be interesting to see how the Sox handle the control problems from Lucas Giolito going forward. Will they let him stay in the big leagues and work out his issues here or will they have him try to right the ship in Charlotte as they did with the recently demoted Carson Fulmer? It is doubtful they will tolerate many more 1 or 2 inning outings out of him before the poor performance forces their hand. The struggles of Giolito remain the biggest surprise of 2018 for me. He really looked like he had figured something out in the 2nd half last year and after the Spring Training he had, it appeared he was ready to build on that. Right now, he appears to be his own worst enemy on the mound and just struggles to find any repeatable delivery. Hopefully, he can rediscover what he had last year because Giolito remains an important part of this rebuild.

Now that the weather has warmed up in Chicago, it is of course time for the Sox to hit the road! An AL Central road trip is now on tap and a trip to beautiful Detroit awaits to kick things off before heading to Cleveland on Monday. Reynaldo Lopez will look to continue the momentum from his masterful appearance against Texas as he takes on Mike Fiers and the Detroit Tigers.

Game Notes-

-Lucas Giolito’s line was 1.1IP, 7ER, 6H, 3BB, 0K. Just ugly

-Welington Castillo began serving his 80 game suspenion today, catcher Alfredo Gonzalez was recalled from AAA

-Prior to the game, Charlie Tilson was recalled from AAA to replace the injured Leury Garcia

-Jose Rondon hit his second HR in as many days. It was a 3 run shot to LF.

Fun Da Mentalz:
I miss the 2017 version of Giolito
