Sox Ruffle Birds Late

May 22 vs Baltimore Orioles

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Angry Birds
I'll bet that one hurt the Orioles (sorry/not sorry).

Short Take: Sox bats finally come through in the 8th to overcome Orioles 3-2.

Another win!? Is that two this week? Ok, Iíll try not to mention that itís another win against another bottom-of-their-division team. Letís just enjoy the wins as they happen, Sox fans.

Fortuitously, I just happened to tune into tonight's game in the bottom of the 8th - the best part of this game. Up to that point, the Sox had outhit the birds but were losing 2-0.

Orioles reliever Mychal Givens may have made the Sox look silly last night, so when I saw he was on the mound in the 8th, I sighed. But Givens was not the same pitcher tonight. Daniel Palka tripled. Wellington Castillo singled, scoring Palka, and the Sox were finally on the board. Leury Garcia struck out, but Jose Rondon then singled, moving Castillo got to 3rd. Trayce Thompson came in to pinch run for Castillo. Adam Engel attempted a safety squeeze, but bunted foul. He took another strike and Rondon stole 2nd. But Engel continued to battle and eventually drew a walk. With bases loaded and Yoan Moncado up, Buck Showalter called for a pitching change, but it wasnít Richard Bleierís night either. Moncado flew out deep to right, scoring Thompson and moving Rondon to 3rd.

Then with 2 out and the game tied, Yolmer Sanchez singled to right to score Rondon, giving the Sox the lead.

Itís not ever easy with the 2018 Sox, though, and tonightís designated closer Nate Jones immediately walked Chris Davis. Pedro Alvarez struck out, but Mark Trumbo singled on the first pitch (he was 4/4 tonight). With runners on 1st and 2nd, and 1 out, Jones couldnít throw strikes to Jace Peterson (#9 in the order and a .188 hitter!) and went 3-0. Finally, he got Peterson to fly out to center and then struck out Chance Cisco on a nasty slider. Whew!

Checking the box score, it looks like Sox starter James Shields had a good outing, going 7 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, striking out 5 and walking 2. Bruce Rondon pitched a solid 8th as well.

Well, allrighty then. Letís do this win thing a little more often, White Sox!

The Sox face the Orioles tomorrow at 7:10 CST, Dylan Covey vs. Alex Cobb.
