A Win! They Said It Couldn't Be Done

May 19 vs. the Texas Rangers

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes
On this night commemorating Star Wars, the win lets us imagine a galaxy of heroes.

Short Take: The Sox beat the Rangers 5-3 in a battle between two division bottom-dwellers.

Stop the presses! The White Sox won a game at home tonight, beating the Texas Rangers 5-3 on Star Wars night on the South Side.

This is a remarkable accomplishment, as this brings their record at home to an embarrassing 5-16. They're rebuilding, of course (insert opinion of its value here), and we are expected to eat a bad season this year with the expectation that great seasons are to come when the rebuilding process is complete.

Maybe the great seasons will come, maybe they won't, but in the meantime we're stuck watching this often-unwatchable club. Fortunately for the White Sox, they faced their brothers in futility, the Texas Rangers, who at 18-29 are resting peacefully at the very bottom of the Western Division.

Tonight Lucas Giolito started for the Bridgeport Remedials, bringing his Nuke LaLoosh imitation for all to see. As has been his wont, he seemed unfamiliar with the strike zone, throwing way too many pitches and enabling the Texans to wait until he sent a soft fastball for them to hit. In the first inning he walked the second hitter but got out of it with a double play. In the second, he allowed three doubles that scored two runs for the patient Rangers. Another run, though unearned, was yielded in the third after a walk and hit-by-pitch put runners on base, followed by a dropped throw to Yoan Moncada that set up the run. At that point it was 3-0 for the Texas dandies and it didn't look good.

But remarkably, the Sox came back in the third with four runs after a series of hits culminating in a bases-clearing triple by Daniel Palka. The Rangers had started with their own minor-major league pitcher, Ariel Jurado, recently up from the farm as part of Texas's own rebuilding project, and he wasn't fooling the Sox hitters.

Jose Abreu, one of the few supporting columns this team has, hit a solo homer in the seventh to give the Sox their fifth run, where the score remained at 5-3 for the balance of the game. Big night for Abreu: 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and a walk. He was only a triple short of the cycle, which is too bad, since we've seen him do it before.

Wins have been rare this year, mostly as a result of meager pitching. Why guys like Giolito, Fulmer, and the rest are afraid of throwing strikes, we may never know. Fulmer has been sent to the pitching clinic in Charlotte to get reacquainted with the strike zone. Giolito got off the hook tonight after he started throwing pitches for strikes after the second inning, but it's harrowing to wait for that to happen.

We're asked to be patient, and this year's squad keeps trying our patience. On Star Wars night I'm reminded of what that great coach Yoda said: "Do. Or do not. There is no try.

Fun Da Mentalz:
A win is always better than a loss. Now let's win 18 in a row and get back to .500!
