WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Can we still call them Twinkies?

May 6th Vs Twins

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Pokemon Go
I really should have been outside walking around.

Short Take: Shields looks great for 6+ innings but the bullpen can't hold the lead.

>What can be said about today's game that hasn't been said several times already this season. Well I guess you can mention how awesome James Shields looked. That's a bit different, but lack of timely hitting, questionable defensive decisions, bad bullpen pitching all combine to cause a late lead to go "poof". Leaving me to ponder philosophical questions like the title of this recap. With no more creme filled yellow cakes in existence, is the nickname still relevant? Would we be better off calling them Ding Dongs or calling the Sox Ho Hos because the jokes on us as our boys of summer lose once again 5-3.

James Shields was the story of the day. He was flawless through 5 and carried a no-hitter into the 6th. He left after 6.2 with a 2-1 lead but ended up being charged for 3 runs when the bullpen let the inherited runners score. Honestly Shields isn't supposed to be doing things like this anymore, not even against bad offensive teams like Minnesota. His smell by date has long come an gone. He's the last Ho Ho on the shelf and even those long defunct products wouldn't still be good to eat this far down the line. It's a darn shame the bullpen sucked so bad because James deserved better. Of course it wasn't all the bullpen's fault the defense in the 8th pretty much handed the Twinkies the game as an error and a questionable decision by Yolmer Sanchez allowed the eventual winning run to score without much of a fight. After that Nate Jones game up an insurance run bomb to straight away center just to be certain there would be no comeback.

And the reason there would be no comeback is that this is not a good offensive team at the moment. With Moncada out and some of the big bats from early in the season struggling the Sox just aren't putting many runs on the board. Maybe if Abreu were hot they'd stand a chance, but he's been struggling a bit recently too. Yolmer Sanchez has been doing okay and had another hit and scored another run today. The Sox successfully executed a few bunts also, but they had 5 hits all day and only walked twice to boot. Despite all that they led 2-0 in the to of the 7th. and were tied at 3 entering the 8th - mercifully taking James Shields off the hook for the loss. But even thought the Sox managed to plate both runners they advanced with their bunting the rest was simply too little too little. No that's not a typo. There was no late offense.

So what started with much promise with Thursday's walkoff bomb ended not with a bang but a whimper as our Ho Ho's got consumed by the Twinkies over the final three games of this 4 game home set. Pirates are coming to town on Tuesday and that's probably going to mean things won't get better anytime soon. Maybe the team will wake up for their crosstown rivals next weekend and give us all something to smile about. Until then, enjoy your snack cakes if you've got them because that's the only sweetness you're going to find today.
