WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Royal Suckitude!

April 29th at KC

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Poker
Sox got Royal Flushed

Short Take: Early lead evaporates as the bullpen and defense fail to get the job done.

This game took WAY too long to play for something so predictable. Honestly neither team really seemed to want to win. Sox had some decent chances and the Royals had even more, but somehow both teams averaged well over a baserunner an inning and still the game ended with the Sox losing only 5-4 and it took well over 3 hours to get there.

Welcome back Ricky. Sorry about your Mom. Wish the Sox could have welcomed you back with a better outcome, but today was just another day when the Sox couldn't generate hits with runners in scoring position. Fortunately the Royals couldn't either but we'll get to that later. The Sox managed to get runners in scoring position in every inning but the first, third and ninth. They even had men on first in the third and ninth but only managed to get 4 guys across the plate. Some of it was bad luck on well hit baseballs that went right to a defender or a KC player making a nice play but honestly, this team just sucks at getting guys home. Dan Palka had another nice outing with a double and a triple and a couple RBI and Nicky Delmonico had a big RBI double in the 7th to tie the game but over all the team was 3/13 in this crucial stat. None of the "big guns" got anything down when it mattered and you aren't going to win many games when your star players can't do that star thing.

Hector Santiago wasn't horrible for the Sox today. He went' 4.2 and left with a 2-1 lead and a man on first. Unfortunately Volstad then came on and applied a huge amount of gasoline and then lit the match, giving up a single and a homer - the second of the game for Cheslor Cuthbert - to put the Sox in a 4-2 hole. Volstad made it through the 6th without giving up any runs but not for lack of trying. Then after three straight singles to open the 7th he managed to get a force-out at home before getting yanked. Avilan came on and got another force at home before going 3-0 on the next hitter then coming back to get the K and end the threat. Sadly it was not enough. Rondon came on for the 8th and promptly hit the first Royal he faced. A passed ball and a single put the Royals in the lead for good as the Sox went meekly in the 9th.

What started out with 3 solid wins in this 5-game set ended with a pair of frustrating losses. I guess that's to be expected when you are as deep into the pitching pool as the Sox currently are, but today's game in particular felt winnable. With tomorrow an off day the Sox will have time to figure out what comes next as they head for St. Louis for a 3-game set starting Tuesday. Will a Sox starting position player reach .300 BA sometime soon? Heck can they crack .270? Tune in Tuesday to find out.
