Short Take:Five HR barrage powers Sox to victory in KC

The Sox entered Kansas City to begin a 5 game set and 7 game road trip in Missouri and were finally greeted by warm weather. The good news for the Sox is the bats warmed up along with the weather. A White Sox home run barrage backed up an improved Lucas Giolito as the Sox took the series opener by a score of 6-3.

Yoan Moncada once again got the Sox out of the chute on the right foot clubbing a HR to RF making it quickly 1-0 good guys in the Top of the 1st. I think Sox fans everywhere can get used to about another 8 or 9 years of Moncada doing this sort of thing on the South Side. Yo-Yo continues to pick on pitches earlier in counts and has been seeing a lot of success with this adjustment. Home runs would continue to be a theme for offense in this game as Sox hitters punished a lot of hanging sliders by KC pitcher Jakob Junis. In the 4th inning, a pair of these solo HRs came off the bats of Welington Castillo and budding Royals killer Matt Davidson, giving Giolito an early 3-0 cushion. The Royals would answer back in the bottom of the 4th as Jorge Soler hit a high towering flyball that just cleared the fence in LF for a 2 run HR. It was a pitch that Giolito left up in the zone a bit and Soler was strong enough to take it out and cut into the Sox lead making it 3-2. The ball was really flying out of Kauffman Stadium tonight which is highly unusual for this ballpark, especially in April.

The Sox had more firepower to deliver in this game which seems to be a theme so far this season playing in Kansas City. Recently re-acquired OF Trayce Thompson got in on the fun in the Top of the 5th, blasting a very deep solo HR of his own giving the Sox a 2 run lead. This was a long bomb that bounced high off the back wall behind the CF fence at least 425 feet away. The only thing better than having the Sox hit four HRs in a game is hitting five HRs and Matt Davidson agreed. He was not done with the Royals in the 6th as he popped his second HR of the game on a frozen rope to the LF corner that. This one was a 2 run shot and gave the Sox some breathing room at 6-2. The way Davidson has punished KC pitching, I have to wonder if he will see anything good to hit during the rest of this series.

For those wondering how Lucas Giolito looked tonight, his stuff and command were better than his previous outings. He had a little help from his defense and the bullpen helped him out of a mini-jam in the 6th inning but overall, there was improvement. He only walked two batters, the curveball command was still a bit spotty but was way better than the previous two outings. Gio is still not fully comfortable on the mound yet but hopefully, this is one to build on.

Kansas City put a lot of pressure on Nate Jones and Joakim Soria in the 8th and 9th but in both cases, they were able to pitch out of trouble and preserve the win for Lucas Giolito. Overall, this was a fun game to watch. A barrage of long balls, a play at the plate, some good defensive plays, and some late inning drama. Yoan Moncada also had three hits and a HR and remains a beacon of hope for the future. Moncada alone is a reason for Sox fans to tune in. Another reason to tune in is Reynaldo Lopez and he takes the ball tomorrow facing off with Royals ace Danny Duffy. Hopefully, Kauffman Stadium remains friendly to the Sox through the weekend.

Game Notes-

-Lucas Giolito pitching line was 5.2IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 2K

-Jose Abreu missed today's game with flu-like symptoms.

-Yoan Moncada was 3 for 5 with 1R, 1HR, and 1RBI

-The Sox now have 5 more HRs at Kauffman Stadium than the Royals do in 2018
