Win Streak Ends at 1

April 24 vs Seattle Mariners

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Operation
Just one wrong move (inning), and it was over.

Short Take: At least it wasn't a blowout, but this 1-0 loss to the Mariners had the "so near, and yet so far" feel to it.

Well, that "winning streak" was fun while it lasted, wasn’t it?

Right off the bat (hah), I thought this might be a continuation of last night’s hit parade. The Sox started off the bottom of the 1st with two straight hits by Tim Anderson and Yolmer Sanchez. But Anderson got caught in a rundown that also involved Yolmer Sanchez, and the whole thing looked strikingly like the Mariner’s baserunning blunder from last night. Fortunately, this rundown ended up in only Anderson being tagged out, and Sanchez back safely on first. Then Jose Abreu grounded into a double play to end the inning.

With Miguel Gonzalez’ departure to the DL yesterday for rotator cuff inflammation and Carson Fulmer starting in his place yesterday, for today’s game the Sox had to rely on their bullpen to get the job done. And indeed, they got ‘er done. Sox starter Chris Volstad had a good - albeit rather - short outing. His only mistake (and only scoring of the game) came in the 4th, when Kyle Seager doubled past a diving Trayce Thompson in right field. Mitch Haniger followed up with a single up the middle to score Seager, and give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Volstad lasted 4.1 IP, giving up 3 hits, 1 run, striking out 3 and walking none. And relievers Hector Santiago and Nate Jones held down the fort, keeping the Mariners scoreless the rest of the game.

Mariners’ starter Marcos Gonzalez was pretty effective through 6 innings, when Tim Anderson singled and moved to 3rd on a Wellington Castillo single. With the tying run on 3rd and 2 outs, Matt Davidson struck out looking at a pitch that was about a foot outside, but effectively pulled back into the strike zone by catcher Mike Zunino. That call brought Ricky Renteria out of the dugout to have a chat with the plate umpire, and resulted in Ricky being thrown out of the game.

The Mariners had their own chances to pad the lead; they left the bases loaded in the 7th. Not to be outdone, the Sox wasted another opportunity in the bottom of the inning. Yoan Moncado led off the 7th with a double, but was left stranded there when Trayce Thompson struck out, Leury Garcia popped out, and Nicky Delmonico (in for Adam Engel) grounded out.

The Sox have had a couple of pretty exciting 9th innings this season, so I held on to a little hope. Could the Sox do it this time? They just needed one measly run. But Mariner’s closer Edwin Diaz made Wellington Castillo, Matt Davidson and Yoan Moncada look silly.

Other notes:

  • Hitting leadoff today, Tim Anderson led the team with 2 of the Sox’s 5 hits. Yoan Moncada, Wellington Castillo, and Yolmer Sanchez contributed the other 3.
  • Sox fans everywhere are sending Danny Farquhar and his family healing thoughts and prayers for a full recovery from a brain aneurysm, suffered Friday night (4/20) in the dugout after pitching the 6th inning.

The Sox wrap up the series against Seattle tomorrow at 1:10 pm; James Shields faces Felix Hernandez.
