Astros 10, Giolito 1

April 21 vs. the Houston Astros

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Maybe Giolito apologizes for his wild non-pitching, or maybe we should think of it as a sorry performance.

Short Take:On a cold night on the South Side, Lucas Giolito regarded the strike zone as a rumor, allowing the Astros to trounce the Sox 10-1.

In Chinese tradition, 2018 is the Year of the Dog. Thus far in Chicago, 2018 has been a dog of a year.

Saturday's game really was one for the dogs. Your faithful TBGR correspondent suffered cold weather and bad pitching to sit through the Sox' 10-1 loss to the Houston Astros. It was a rough night for us, but even rougher for South Side starter Lucas Giolito. Last year's AAA hero lasted only two innings, and in that time gave up nine earned runs, five hits, and seven walks. Couldn't find the strike zone with a compass and a map. 72 pitches in those two innings, only 31 of which were strikes.

The White Sox have lost their last six games while being outscored 54-15. In the midst of that streak the Sox were snowed-out three games in Minnesota. And then last night reliever Danny Farquhar suffered a brain hemorrhage while in the dugout and is in critical condition. The cliche is that it's a long season; it's been plenty long already.

Certainly Giolito and his teammates are concerned about Farquhar, but their comrade's poor fortune doesn't explain the last six games. While Giolito was soiling the sheets, the hitters were waving meekly at Dallas Keuchel's pitches to give him his first win of the season. And give him is just what Giolito did. All those walks and and all those hits in the first two innings were an overripe spirit of generosity.

Trace Thompson is back in town, having come from the Brewers yesterday in a trade for Tyler Saladino, and he announced his presence with a solo homer in the fifth. It was the Sox' only run, and with a nine-run deficit it didn't affect Houston's game plan, but seeing a number larger than zero on the board is some comfort.

It's a tough year already: terrible weather, inconsistent offense, consistently poor pitching. But wait! This is the part where we sing -- all together now! -- it's a rebuilding year, and we pledge allegiance to Rick Hahn and his carefully-wrought strategy. It might be next year! It might be 2020! Just be patient and the planets will align behind Kopech and Jiminez!

I sure hope so. I don't know who's going to clean up behind this leaky little train until then. At this point the best use of our time is to wish the best for Danny Farquhar and his family, and to hope Giolito can get a GPS to help him find the strike zone.

Fun Da Mentalz:
This game was too cold, too long, and too bad.
