Frozen Stiffs!

April 8 Vs Kittens

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Sox get swept off the ice.

Short Take: Lopez and the pen pitch a gem, but the bats stay ice cold.

Is it Spring yet? I see we're playing baseball, but all those foggy breaths make me wonder if I should be singing "Bear Down". Of course we'd need to score a touchdown or two first for that to happen, and the Sox offense has been woefully anemic these past few days so 6 or even 7 runs seems a bit of a stretch. Not saying it can't happen and the team certainly looked like they could slug a bit in the pre and early season, but right now their bats seem to be frozen - anyone want to build a snowman? Might as well do it because the Sox offense was stacking up zeroes all day long and they went on to lose 1-0.

Starting pitcher Reynaldo Lopez was the only bright spot of the day. For the second consecutive outing he looked like a genuine top of the order pitcher. He went 7 strong innings yielding only 2 hits and a single run with 5 strikeouts. Though Lopez walked 5 none of them scored and the single run he did yield came after a single, stolen base and passed ball in the top of the first inning. Lopez looks like the real deal. Hopefully once the weather improves the offense will give him some support and he'll get some W's. After Lopez departed the bullpen kept things in check with Luis Avilan and recently recalled Bruce Rondon throwing two innings of shutout ball to give the team a chance.

Sadly, that didn't seem to matter as the Sox bats were as cold as the "breeze" off the lake for most of the game. The Sox did manage to load the bases in their half of first with only one away but couldn't plate the tying run. They followed that failure by putting 4 men on base over the next 8 innings. with only Avisail Garcia doing it twice in that stretch. Even so they had a small glimmer of hope when Garcia reached safely on an error to lead things off in the ninth. Sadly Jose Abrue then came up and grounded into the Sox second double play of the afternoon. Matt Davidson then struck out looking and the game was over.

So that sucked. Hopefully this is an anomaly caused by the arctic blast that descended on Chicago this weekend. I know this team isn't expected to compete but it would be nice if they managed to not compete while actually competing, if that makes any sense. Swept away by Detroit on the opening home weekend is not a fun way to start the season, things have to improve from here, right? Well guess we'll find out tomorrow when The Sox take on Tampa. Game time has been moved to the daylight hours in case you were unaware. I guess that's to take advantage of whatever warmth there might be. Game starts at 1:10 in Chicago with Miguel Gonzalez taking the mound for our boys of "summer". A part of me expects them to get this train back on track, but somewhere in the background I can here someone whisper... "you know nothing, Jon Snow." Which is weird because that's not my name...
