Gunning Down the Royals!

September 22nd Vs. Royals

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Sox played like bad guys but were redeemed when the gunslinger did his thing and yes the Royals totally deserved it.

Short Take: Sox nearly blew it with a horrible defensive inning but then the offense woke up and the Sox fought back.

It obviously hasn't been a great summer of baseball, but at least it's been what most Sox fans expected. Along the way we've had our share of good moments and bad ones. Moncada got off to a horrible start leading to much angst. The bullpen completely fell off the map for a month or so causing many blown saves and games and of course the Sox dove to the bottom of the standings and have remained mired in the bottom three for the last several weeks. Most of us are only watching with half an eye open as we do something else. At least I am. Most of the games haven't really been worth watching but tonight's actually was. In fact it was about the most fun I've had watching a baseball game in a long time. Sure there was that awful 3rd inning when the defense stuffed it's collective head up it's collective asses and the Sox gave up a whole bunch of unearned runs on top of the two earned ones but the rest of the game was absolutely awesome and the Sox went on to win 7-6.

The game actually started out well. Their bats were hot from the get go and only a lack of timely hitting in the first few innings kept them from blowing the game wide open. Still they jumped out to a 2-run lead in the second when Narvaez singled to lead off, Anderson was hit by a pitch and then Davidson doubled home Omar. Tim nearly overran the bag at third but managed to scramble back safely with a nice evasive lunge. A couple of ground-outs later Anderson scored but Davidson got stranded at third.

Sadly that's when the wheels fell off as the defense lost it's collective mind in the top of the third. Moncada and Anderson decided to play hot-potato with the baseball and the Royals took advantage. When the smoke had cleared they had batted around and scored 6. Only two of them were earned as there were 2 errors and a wild pitch in the inning. Only a smartly turned double play kept the score from being much worse. In the end the Sox were down 6-2 and most of the twelve fans watching probably changed the channel.

But not me. Yeah I was watching a show on TV and following loosely on my iPad but pretty soon I was watching the game more closely than the show and had to keep rewinding during lulls in the baseball action. Reynaldo Lopez wasn't sharp tonight. I'm sure he was rattled by that long second inning and he did recover to go 6.1 and earn the win, but he along the way he gave up 10 hits and allowed more baserunners in the 5th, 6th and 7th. He got bailed out by a hang-wiffum liner that nearly took Abreu's head off in the 5th that would have tied the game and again by Garcia's superb throw from right in the 6th to gun down Gordon at home by 6 feet. In the 7th Lopez finally yielded with one out and Aaron Bummer came on to pitch.

But what's that you said about Lopez getting the win, voodoo? Well see the Sox came back (they thought we were a gonner but the Sox came back the very next play...) (but I digress) That's right the Sox bats were hot early on in this game. Lots of hits all over the place and in the 4th they put it all together and started mashing the baseball. Narvaez led off with a double and Anderson singled him home. Up came Matt Davidson and he crushed one to left to make the score 6-5. After Adam Engel took strike three, Yolmer Sanchez singled and Yoan "Mr. September" Moncada drilled one to straight away center that was gone the instant it left the bat.

That actually wrapped up the scoring and after Lopez left the game the bullpen wrapped it up, but not without some fun drama in the ninth. Juan Minaya started out fine, striking out Alex Gordon, but then gave up a single to leadoff hitter Whit Merrifield, who promptly stole second. Lorenzo Cain then worked the count full and drilled a single to right. Avisail Garcia stumbled and went down to his knees in an obvious "reel in the fish" effort to get Merrifield to try to score. It worked for Avi, for Whit... not so much. Avi came up gunning and one-hopped another strike to the plate to cut down Merrifield on a nifty and alert tag by Narvaez. But the play wasn't over. Omar jumped up looked at Cain breaking for second and pump faked. Cain started to retreat and Narvaez fired to first. Cain turned and fled for second at top speed but Abreu cut him down with a nice throw to Anderson who applied an alert nifty tag of his own to end the game. Well almost. The Royals appealed but both batters were clearly out and after a brief review the celebration started for real. How often have you seen a game end on a 9-2-3-6 double plays where both runners had to be tagged out? Like I said, it was a fun game to watch.

So that concludes tonight's fun at the old ballpark. And as fun as it was to watch, the Sox actually won their way out of a top three draft pick for now. With the way the team is currently playing that doesn't really surprise me. Tigers have been tanking hard these last few weeks and the Sox are seeing the fruition of some of their young players finding their groove and that is leading to the Sox playing their way into the number 4 draft slot at the time of this recap. Well what's a poor Sox fan to do? I guess you can root for a loss tomorrow if you want. Game time is at 6:10 in Chicago. As for me, I'm just going to enjoy the win.

That was the most fun I've had watching a baseball game in a long time.
