Sox Office Smash Hit:
Missing in Action
Timely hits and putting the ball in play were MIA.

Short Take:  Only 1 run and 14Ks from Sox offense spoils solid outing by Lucas Giolito.

The last time the rebuilding Sox faced the Astros, it was quite a fun series on the South Side. Timely hits, great pitching, and lots of home runs lead the good guys to a shocking sweep of the AL's best team. Tonight the Sox headed into Houston looking to reclaim some of that fun vibe from the previous Astros series. The pitching part of the equation was there most of the night but the offense struck out way too much to sustain any offense as the Sox fell in Game 1 by a score of 3-1.

If there is a silver lining to the poor offensive performance tonight, it's that Yoan Moncada had another nice day at the plate with 3 of the Sox 6 hits. Yoan got the offense going for the Sox in the top of the 3rd with a hard single to right field. Jose Abreu did Jose Abreu type things which is driving a run home with a double that easily scored the speedy Moncada from 1st base. Unfortunately, the Sox had a hard time building on that inning and searched most of the game for continuation hitting. Actually, even contact was elusive for most of the night. Houston pitching shut the Sox offense down when they needed to and kept them chasing hard sliders down and away most of the night. McHugh and the Astros bullpen combined to strikeout the aggressive Sox offense 14 times.

Lucas Giolito had another solid outing today against a really good Astros team. He went 6.2 innings giving up only 2 earned runs and the best news was just one walk. The one bad inning came in the 4th where he gave up a solo shot to MVP threat Jose Altuve and a run scoring double by Alex Bregman. Other than that, Giolio was pretty darn solid despite keeping his fastball primarily in the low 90s tonight which is a tad on the slower side for him. It's great to see that he can still keep a good offense in check without his best fastball velocity. He had a 3 pitch mix of fastball, curve, and changeup working and induced a lot of weak contact outs. It appears that Giolito has a lot of late movement on his fastball that will serve him well in the big leagues. After Giolito departed, the Astros tacked on another run against Farquhar in the 9th and the Sox had a mild threat in the 9th but Giles shut the door on that for a final score of 3-1.

Whenever the Sox play a game in Minute Maid Park, I always think back to the 2005 World Series Championship that was won there. Seeing Moncada and Giolito excel tonight helps playoff starved Sox fans like me dream that perhaps one day in the not too distant future, they will return the Commissioner's Trophy to the South Side where it belongs. Meanwhile in present day Houston, the rebuild rolls right along tomorrow as Carson Fulmer takes on Dallas Keuchel in Game 2.

Game Notes-

-Lucas Giolito went 6.2 IP, 2ER, 7H, 1BB, 3K. Quality start.

-Yoan Moncada went 3 for 4 with 3 singles.

-Tim Anderson was 1 for 4 with a single.

-Jose Abreu drove in his 97th RBI in the 3rd.
