Rattle and Bummed

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Alexander the Great
KC closer Alexander pulls a Houdini act in the 9th.

Short Take:  1st inning grand slam by Brandon Moss stands up as stranded runners kill White Sox comeback in Game 2.

An odd start time of 12:15PM due to a U2 concert next door at Arrrowhead got the White Sox up bright and early in KC. The good guys were looking for to two in a row from the host Royals. KC is somehow still alive in this AL wild card race and the Sox were looking to once again play spoiler for a team that has been a huge thorn in their side in recent years. Unfortunately, a parade of stranded runners and a bad first inning from Dylan Covey would ruin the matinee game at Kauffman Stadium for the White Sox as they fell 4-3.

This has been a rebuilding season that features a lot of flashy pitching prospects like Carson Fulmer, Reynaldo Lopez, and Lucas Giolito so when its time for Dylan Covey to take the bump, there isn't a whole lot of optimism or excitment about his future on the team. He hovers somewhere between bullpen filler and organizational pitching depth and his previous starts have been filled with control issues and a lot of HRs allowed. This afternoon, Dylan got all of his shortcomings out of the way early. Covey walked the bases loaded in what had to be at least a 20 minute slog through the top of the Royals order. After working the count full on Brandon Moss, he left a fastball in the middle of the zone and Moss crushed it for a grand slam to right center field making it 4-0 Royals very quickly. The way Covey looked in the 1st, I didn't expect him to survive more than a couple innings. To Dylan's credit, he did settle down and gut out 5.2 innings without giving up more damage.

The Sox tried to come back in this game but had a hard time striking for the big inning. A Yolmer Sanchez RBI double in the 3rd and a Tim Anderson RBI single in the 4th cut KC's lead in half. The Sox bullpen did a good job keeping KC's offense in check after taking over for Covey. When the game was well within reach, Rob Brantly got the Sox within 1 run in the 8th inning with an RBI double off Royals reliever Moylan. It looked like the Sox were all set to break KC's heart in the Top of the 9th but unfortunately faceplanted. Adam Engel opened the 9th with a double followed by a Yolmer Sanchez single that put runners at 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs and the Sox were suddenly in business. However, Moncada struck out, Abreu popped up, and Davidson grounded out without getting the tying run home and that was all she wrote for the rally. The Sox fell to the Royals 4-3.

It's been a little while since the Sox had a frustrating game like this where they couldn't get the big hit. In the last handful of games, the offense has been clicking but that wasn't the case this afternoon. Overall, they finished 4 for 15 with RISP and stranded 10 today. That's not going to work. Dylan Covey pitched just ok after getting clobbered in the 1st inning but there just isn't a whole lot there that excites me about him as a pitcher. He doesn't miss a ton of bats, he gives up too many HRs, and his stuff is pretty ordinary. He reminds me a little bit of Dylan Axelrod who was someone that needed pinpoint control to survive in the bigs. I could end up being wrong but he seems like a guy occupying a roster spot until more talented players come along to claim it. Speaking of more talented, a prospect named Lucas Giolito takes the bump tomorrow against the Royals looking to nail down a rare series victory in Kansas City. Giolito will match up with Eric Skokglund at 1:15pm.

Game Notes-

-Dylan Covey went 5.2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 4BB, 1K

-Yoan Moncada was activated from the DL today and was 1 for 5 in his return.

-Yoan Moncada was 1 for 5 with a single and 1K.

-Tim Anderson was 2 for 4 with an RBI single.

 Dylan Covey = ZZZZZ
