8th Inning Dooms Sox in Tinseltown

August 15th, 2017 at Los Angeles Dodgers

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Twister
The Dodgers are destroying everything in their path.

Short Take:  Miguel Gonzalez pitched solidly, Dodgers kick the door down in the 8th.

When the Sox last locked horns with the Dodgers back in July, I mentioned how they've ascended to the enviable position that the Sox are striving for. At that time, the Dodgers were 35 games over .500. In the time since that series, LA has somehow risen to even greater heights at 49 games over .500 entering the series. Miguel Gonzalez took the ball for the Sox to try to tame one of the best teams in baseball against a pitcher who hadn't lost one of his starts since April.

Tim Anderson got things going in a flash for the White Sox as he ambushed Alex Wood's first pitch fastball for a solo HR to left center. This was almost a blueprint of the game opening HR he clubbed off Drew Pomeranz at Fenway Park last Saturday. Anderson has come to life here the last few weeks and it's great to see him shake himself out of that emotional funk after the death of his friend. Unfortunately, there would be little offense for the South Siders after the Anderson blast. Alex Wood and Miguel Gonzalez pretty much pitched to standoff until the bottom of the 6th with the game holding at 1-0. However, you just knew that one run was not going to hold up against a team like the Dodgers at home.

Miggy got himself into a bases loaded 1 out jam in the 6th inning after a Bellinger infield single, a sharp single by Grandal, and a four pitch walk to Puig. A sac fly by Forsythe would tie the game up at 1-1 but fortunately for the Sox, Grandal made a base running mistake and was caught in no man's land. It was a heads up play by the Sox and they were more than willing to accept the charity by the Dodgers to end the inning with the game still tied.

Unfortunately, the game was decided in the 8th inning. After an opening single from Justin Turner, Aaron Bummer walked the bases loaded. Jake Petricka came on in relief and got the groud ball he needed but it just wasn't hit hard enough to turn two. All Jake needed was one more out to escape but with the sacks packed with Dodgers, he plunked Joc Pederson in the leg for the go ahead run. After the HBP, the wheels came off the wagon for Petricka who hasn't quite been right after coming off the DL for a second time. You don't get to be 49 games over .500 by not kicking the door down when the opposing team cracks it open for you, and that's exactly what Los Angeles did tonight.

Not much else to say about this one. The lone highlights for the good guys were Anderson's HR and Miguel's solid outing. If Miguel keeps pitching this well, one would assume a trade is coming. The Dodgers kept their dream season going while the Sox continue to build for the future. It's tough to win any close games with the bullpen completely depleted by the recent trades. The Sox will look to try and get their first win against the Dodgers tomorrow as Carlos Rodon takes on Yu Darvish.

Game Notes-

-Miguel Gonzalez went 6.0 IP, 5H, 4Ks, 3BBs, 1ER

-The Dodgers moved to a league best 50 games over .500. This is good folks.

-Prior to the game, the Sox promoted Eloy Jimenez and Zack Collins from Class A Winston Salem to Class AA Birmingham.

-Prior to the game, the Sox also reinstated Dylan Covey from the DL. He replaced Tyler Clippard on the 25 man roster.
