Late Inning Heroics

August 10th versus Houston Astors

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Cuban Fury
Moncado’s Late Inning Heroics Save The Day

Short Take:  Sox come back to tie the game in the ninth and win it in the 11th to sweep Houston

The Sox came into Thursday night’s game having already having won their first series since early July and a chance to sweep the AL-leading Houston Astros. Things started slowly for the Sox, squandering many scoring opportunities along the way but Yoan Moncado came up big late in the game as the Sox won it 3-2 in 11 innings to complete the sweep.

Houston threatened in the top of the second as Alex Bregman reached on a single and JD Davis reached on error as Yoan botched a double-play ball. Bremen was gunned down on a great throw by Omar Narvaez while trying to steal third, a crucial out as Juan Centeno singled the next pitch. Adam Engel got the ball into Narvaez , who quickly threw to Yoan to put the tag on Centeno trying to stretch his hit into a double.

Jake Marisnick started the scoring in the top of the third with a solo home run to left off Sox starter Carlos Rodon. They added a run to their tally in the top of the sixth as Josh Reddick lead off with a single and scored two batters later on a Marwin Gonzalez double, giving the Astros a 2-0 lead.

The Sox offense meanwhile could not get anything going against Houston starter Brad Peacock. Four times over the first five innings the Sox got a hit with two out and stranded the baserunner and it wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth that they managed to string together some offense. Jose Abreu struck out to start the inning but Avi picked him up with double to center. Avi reached third next batter as Nicky Delmonico singled to left. Yoan hit into what looked like a double play but beat the throw to first, allowing Avi to score, 2-1 Houston after six.

The Sox threatened in the bottom of the seventh and eighth but could not get a clutch hit when needed. The Sox had runners on first and second in the seventh but stranded both, then had runners on first and third with no outs in the bottom of the eighth. Yolmer struck out for out number one, followed by an expletive-laden Tim Anderson strikeout for out number two. Omar Narvaez was intentionally walked to load the bases but all three were left stranded as pinch-hitting Alen Hanson grounded to first to end the threat. That’s when the fun started.

Houston closer Ken Giles struck out Leury Garcia to start the bottom of the ninth but Yoan tied the game three pitches later, sending a solo home run to a very happy fan in left-center. The Sox made it interesting as Giles walked Avi and Delmonico with two outs but struck out Yolmer, stranding the winning run.

The Sox went down on three strikeouts in the bottom of the tenth but started the eleventh with a Leury Garcia single to right. Leury reached second on a Josh Reddick throwing error and came around to score the winning run on Yoan Moncado single to center, making the final score 3-2 and completing the series sweep. I really enjoy when the Sox sweep the Astros.

Carlos Rodon pitched a great game, scattering 9 hits over 8 innings, striking out 4 and walking none but allowing the bullpen some much needed rest. Omar Narvaez went 2-for-4 on the night, Avi also had a great night going 3-for-4. Sox hitters collected 11 hits but a combined 14 strikeouts, Sox pitching meanwhile struck out 7 and allowed only one walk.
