Youth Movement Beats Up Astros

August 9 vs Houston Astros

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Edge of Tomorrow
Every time the Sox play like this, the future looks a little bit better.

Short Take:  Miguel Gonzalez is masterful against AL-best Houston, and the Kids provide the lumber in 7-1 thumping of Astros.

I may have said something differently earlier this season, but I've changed my mind: Watching the 2017 White Sox team CAN be fun. Observing that this group of young players can excel, especially against a Houston Astros team with the best record in baseball, is pretty dang awesome.

Not to be outdone by the kids, Miguel Gonzalez was excellent tonight. He shut down the Astros for 7 innings, until Derek Fisher hit a leadoff home run in the top of the 8th. Gonzalez's line of 8 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts was more than good enough to tally the win.

Both teams were scoreless until the 5th inning, when the Sox finally broke the stalemate. Tim Anderson homered, scoring Nicky Delmonico, who'd reached base on his second single of the game. Omar Narvaez followed with a single, and Leury Garcia doubled. Yolmer Sanchez's single brought both of them home, and the Sox took a 4-0 lead.

Sox tacked on three more in the 6th. Yoan Moncada walked, Delmonico singled again, and Anderson doubled to the RF fence, scoring Moncada. A pitching change saw our old friend Francisco Liriano take the mound. Undeterred, Leury Garcia singled to left field, and both base runners scored.

With a 7-0 lead behind him, Gonzalez pitched solidly through 8 innings. He allowed that leadoff home run in the 8th, but surely the Sox bullpen was grateful for that excellent long outing by the starter.

David Holmberg closed out the game in the 9th, allowing a double to Alex Bregman, but no runs scored and the Sox celebrated their second straight win.

Who would have thought that tomorrow the White Sox would be going for the sweep against the Houston Astros? Tune in Thursday at 7:10 pm CST, when Carlos Rodon faces Brad Peacock.
