WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Texas Takedown

August 8 versus Houston Astros

Tonight the Sox looked like the 71-win team

Short Take:   Sox Offense Jumps On Dallas To Defeat Houston

After dropping six in a row, including a 4-game sweep at Fenway, the Sox returned home Tuesday evening to face the AL-leading Houston Astros. Despite the unlikelihood of snapping the losing streak against the top team in the AL, the Sox offense got to starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel early behind adequate pitching and solid defense, defeating the Astros 8-5.

Sox starter Derek Holland looked shaky in the top of the first but managed to pitch around two walks to come away unscathed. The Sox meanwhile jumped to a quick lead in their half of the first, sending 8 batters to the plate and scoring three. Tim Anderson started the inning with a lead-off double and reached third on a Tyler Saladino single. Avi singled to score Anderson and reached second on a double steal. Kevin Smith walked to load the bases, followed by a Moncado single that scored Saladino. A Leury Garcia fielders-choice scored Avi to give the Sox 3-0 lead but a Nicky Delmonico double play ended the threat.

Houston unfortunately got those three runs right back in the top of the second as Derek Holland pitched into trouble he couldn’t work out of. Holland got two quick outs after giving up a lead-off single to Marwin Gonzalez but then loaded the bases on a Brian McCann single and Jame Marisnick walk. Alex Bregman plated those three baserunners, sending a 93 mph fastball to deep center to tie the game at three.

The Sox went down quietly in the bottom of the second but jumped on Keuchel in the bottom of the third, again sending eight batters to the plate and scoring three runs. Jose Abreau and Avi reached base on singles, both coming around to score on a Kevan Smith double. Kevan came around to score four batters later on an Adam Engel single, giving the Sox a 6-3 lead.

Kevan Smith continued his career night in the bottom of the fourth, homering to center and scoring Jose Abreau to give the Sox a 8-3 lead. The Astros got two of those runs back with two solo home runs off Jake Petricka in the top of the seventh and threatened again in the ninth with one out and runners on second and third. A Carlos Beltran double play ended that threat and the game, giving the Sox their first win in August.

Game Notes:

- Kevan Smith went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs scored, four RBIs and two walks

- Derek Holland threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs while striking out five but walking seven

- Houston starter Dallas Kuechel gave up 8 runs on 10 hits, his worst start of the season

- The Sox eight runs in tonight’s game was their highest since scoring eight June 30th against the Rangers. Maybe we just need more games against teams from Texas?

I’m hoping this is what White Sox baseball in 2020 will look like.
