Hapless Against Happ

August 2 vs Toronto Blue Jays

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Rings
According to multiple bad movie lists, one of the worst of 2017...just like this team.

Short Take: Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ and friends strike out 14 Southsiders as Jays take series from Sox.

Today's 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays handed the Jays the series win, and wrapped up a homestand in which the Sox went 2-6.

Sox starter Derek Holland pitched better than he has been pitching, surviving 6 innings and giving up 5 hits and only 2 earned runs. However, he also gave up 4 walks and only struck out 3.

Trouble was, J.A. Happ who has had struggles of his own this season made this Sox team look pretty clueless at the plate. Happ only allowed 1 Sox run and 6 hits over 7 innings, and he struck out 10. Between Happ and Leone, over the 7th-8th innings, they struck out 6 Sox hitters in a row. Ouch.

Holland gave up 1 run in the 3rd, when Josh Donaldson (who seems to have woken up against the Sox this week) walked, and Justin Smoak's double scored Donaldson. The only other run Holland gave up was a solo homer to Pearce in the 6th.

Jake Petricka threw a scoreless 7th in relief, but then gave up one run in the 8th on a walk and a couple of singles, and a second run on a wild pitch. Chris Beck took over in the top of the 9th and promptly gave up a leadoff homer to Donaldson.

In fairly typical 2017 fashion, the Sox couldn't take advantage of Tim Anderson's leadoff triple in the 3rd inning, and didn't score until the 6th. Leury Garcia singled, scoring Tyler Saladino from 3rd. The bottom of the 9th held a brief glimmer of hope when Yolmer Sanchez and Alen Hanson both singled off Jays reliever Joe Biagini, with no outs. That was followed by a quick pitching change, and Roberto Osuna retired Adam Engel, Anderson, and Tyler Saladino in quick succession.

The Sox are headed to Boston to face the Other Sox tomorrow at 6:10 pm CST. Miguel Gonzalez is set to face Eduardo Rodriquez.
