Moncada's First Homer Is Highlight in Sox Loss

July 26 vs Chicago Cubs

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Back to the Future
Any chance we could travel back to the future White Sox NOW, instead of watching losing teams for a couple years?

Short Take:  Yoan Moncada provided tonight's highlight, and it wasn't his hair – he took Jake Arrieta deep for his first major league home run in loss to Cubs, 8-3.

There may have been lots of buzz in the MLB about how the Sox have been gathering a terrific farm system, but man…rebuilding makes for some really bad baseball in the meantime. I've come to expect losing every night, and am pleasantly surprised when they win. So perhaps it was good news that the Sox came back to G-rate Field with a 1-1 split in the Crosstown Series.

But tonight, The-Pitcher-Formerly-Known-as-Big-Game didn't have it, while Jake Arrieta and company did. The Sox lost to the Cubs 8-3, fell behind in the series 2 games to 1, and are in danger of losing possession of the Crosstown Cup. Oh, the horror.

The only real bright spot of this game was Yoan Moncada. In the 7th, he hit his first career home run off of Arrieta - on an 0-2 count, no less. It was a long drive to center field. Congrats to Yoan, and we hope it’s the first of many while he's on the Sox.

James Shields was pretty good for 3.1 innings, but gave up 3 singles in a row in the 4th and allowed the first run. In the 5th, it was all Cubs. Between singles, walks, errors, and heavens knows what else (hey, I went to walk the dogs after the Cubs loaded the bases with no outs), the Cubs scored 5 runs off Shields and his successor David Holmberg.

Arietta held the Sox hitless until the 5th, when Moncada walked, Omar Narvaez hit a ground rule double, and Alen Hanson hit a deep sac fly to score Moncada.

The Cubs tallied more runs off a succession of the few relievers left in the Sox bullpen, and Alen Hanson hit a solo homer in the 8th to make the final score was 8-3.

I watched the ESPN broadcast with Jason Benetti, David Ross and Rick Sutcliffe. It was a change from the regular Hawk-Stone or Stone-Benetti broadcast, and at least it was somewhat entertaining. There was a lot of Cubs talk, of course, more than I cared about. But it was different. After they got over some silliness in the beginning of the broadcast, Benetti and the ex-Cubbers had some interesting conversations, complete with ribbing, that were more like sitting around the living room watching the game with friends.

Last game in this series is tomorrow at 7:10 pm; Mike Pelrey versus Jon Lester.
