Cano'cked Out

July 14th versus Seattle Mariners

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Dark Half
The Sox begin a long second half of the season that will surely see more players traded with all eyes on the future

Short Take:   A couple of bad pitches doom the Sox in loss to Seattle

The first half of the White Sox' 2017 rebuild season was pretty much what most Sox fans had expected; a lot of frustrating baseball with glimpses of solid pitching and offense here and there. Unfortunately those glimpses were far outweighed by the frustration, as evidenced by the Sox AL worst 38-49 record heading into the second half. This is White Sox baseball for the immediate future as they trade talent and stockpile prospects, with the ultimate goal of being playoff contenders once more. By all counts this return to competitiveness should be around the 2019 season.

Unfortunately there are still 237 games to be played between now and 2019, the first of which began a brief five-game homestand on a slightly chilly evening against the Seattle Mariners. James Shields threw six innings of 'meh' for the Sox but James Paxton's solid six innings spelled doom for the Sox offense as they lose by a final score of 4-2.

The Sox drew first blood in the top of the second as All-Star Avi singled to left, then stole second and reached third on a throwing error. Tyler Saladino, fresh off the DL, returned with a great 10-pitch at-bat, fouling off six pitches before smacking a ground-rule double to the right field corner, scoring Avi and giving the Sox a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately the Sox didn't trade Shields over the break and that lead was quickly surrendered. Mike Zunino led off the Seattle third with a walk, followed by a Jean Segura single to center. With two on and one out, Shields left an 85-mph cutter over the plate to All-Star MVP Robinson Cano, who bounced it off the top of the center field wall into the seats for a 3-run homer.

The Sox got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth with Avi once again singling and swiping his second base of the evening. Avi came around to score off a Matt Davidson double to center, making the score 3-2. The Mariners got that run back a half inning later as Jean Segura doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. That would round out the scoring for both teams, final score 4-2 Seattle.

Shields' evening included those four runs over six innings, walking three and striking out one. Paxton by contrast also threw six innings, giving up two runs, walking none and striking out nine Sox hitters. Seattle pitching did not allow a baserunner the final five innings.
