Anderson's Rocky Mountain High

July 8 vs. the Colorado Rockies

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Summit
The White Sox came to the Rockies tonight and made it to the summit.

Short Take:Jose Quintana struck out 10 and Tim Anderson saved the night with a game-winning homer in the ninth as the Sox beat the Rockies, 5-4.

Jose Quintana is trade bait. That's accepted wisdom since the White Sox have embarked on a rebuilding/retooling/remodeling project, and durable pitchers are always in demand. That's especially true of guys like Qunitana with low-maintenance contracts. Mr. Q showed some of his trade value tonight as the Sox beat the Rockies 5-4 in Denver's rarefied air. He went 5-1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts, though he gave up three runs to the mountain men.

However, Tim Anderson could qualify as a trade prize as well. He hit the winning home run tonight in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie and make it possible for David Robertson to get his 13th save. Anderson's homer was his second in two nights, both of which went deep to center field. Power like that is no accident. Could it be that Anderson is showing his true value after a year and a half in the bigs?

The Sox scored first, always a good sign. After two outs in the top of the first, Jose Abreu got a triple, Todd Frazier drew a walk, and Yolmer Sanchez got his own triple to drive in two. Kevan Smith then singled to send home Sanchez, and just like that it was 3-0 for the South Side mountaineers.

The Rockies aren't chumps, though, and got some of their own in the bottom of the first when Nolan Arenado hit one of Quintana's pitches a couple dozen rows into the left-field seats for a two-run homer. As conversations center on Quintana's trade value, every inconvenient earned run seems to affect his value like a wild startup on the stock market.

But our heroes picked up one more run in the fourth after Willy Garcia got the Sox's third triple of the night and scored on Jose Quintana's sacrifice fly. Yes, I said Jose Quintana's sacrifice fly. National League rules in Colorado, you know, and rather than serve as ninth-hitting cannon fodder, Quintana drove in a run to help his own cause.

Ah, but the rascally, hard-hitting Rockies came back in the sixth with another run to tighten it to 4-3, and then yet another run in the eighth to tie it. Oh, man...laments were heard as we shook our heads in anticipation of a bullpen blowout.

But then in the top of the ninth Anderson led off with his homer to bring the tally to 5-4. Robertson marched into the bottom of the frame (more trade bait), and quickly dispatched the thin-air home team.

Who knows what this team will look like in another few weeks? Quintana, Robertson, Frazier, half the bullpen -- all could be gone and replaced by seat-warmers while we wait for the fresh flowers to blossom in Charlotte and Birmingham. We've resigned ourselves to the 35th Street squad doing little this year, though it still feels good to win. I'm not much of a fisherman, but I understand the value of good bait.

Tim Anderson

To paraphrase the Beatles, Tim Anderson is getting better all the time. Game winning homer, his second dinger in as many nights.
