Paltry Pelfry, 'Pen No Match for Sonny Gray

July 5 at Oakland Athletics

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The 2017 Sox make me feel like an alien took over and sucked out all my emotions.

Short Take:  Yet another bullpen game in which the Sox bats cannot do much off the opposing starter; As win 7-4 and take series from Sox.

Looks the Oakland As own the White Sox in 2017; after sweeping the Sox in Chicago in June, they took 2 of 3 with a 7-4 win over the boys in black today.

Right off the bat (hah), Mike Pelfry allowed a double to Matt Joyce and a single to Jed Lowrie, then Khris Davis ground into a double play to score the first run of the game. A two-run double by Bruce Maxwell in the 3rd made it 3-0 As.

Pelfry was already at 90 pitches in 3 innings and was done two hitters into the 4th, after Jaycob Brugman hit a long ball to make to it 4-0 As. The next in a succession of Sox mediocre pitchers took the mound. Gregory Infante gave up a single to Rajai Davis, then allowed Davis to steal 2nd and then 3rd without even a glance or throw. Matt Joyce walked, then stole 2nd, also uncontested. With the infield pulled in, Jed Lowrie singled right where Yolmer Sanchez would normally play -- and two more runs scored. This inning was like watching an overmatched Little League game, minus the sympathy for the embattled team (at least from me).

With the Sox behind 6-0, As starter Sonny Gray held Sox hitters at bay, until the 5th when they finally got on the board. Todd Frazier walked and Matt Davidson hit his 18th homer of the season to make it 6-2 As.

The 6th inning featured no scoring, but more Rajai Davis running rampant on the bases, this time against Juan Minaya. That was…entertaining, to put it nicely.

The As scraped up another run in the 8th, using wild-pitch offense courtesy of David Holmberg.

In an attempt to keep the "we just don't quit" attitude alive in the top of the 9th, Todd Frazier provided a little drama with a two-run homer off Sean Dolittle, with 2 strikes and 2 out. That was kind of fun. But Matt Davidson struck out looking to end the game. Yikes.

A day off tomorrow, then the Sox play the Rockies at Coors Field, 7:40 pm CST. Derek Holland faces German Marquez.
