This One's for the Birds

June 14 vs Baltimore Orioles

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Birds
Black and white and sort of horrifying? Yep, sounds like a 2017 Sox game.

Short Take:  Orioles finally find their road bats and pound Miguel Gonzalez and friends, 10-6.

The Sox certainly had nothing to crow about today. A nice 5-1 lead by the top of the 3rd was a good start. But they allowed the Orioles to peck away until their goose was cooked and they took a 10-6 loss.

Going into today's game, Baltimore had lost 11 straight road games, including the last two to the White Sox. I suppose it was too much to hope that the Orioles would lose yet again.

The start of the game was delayed 1.5 hours due to rain. When they finally got under way, the Sox got to starter Dylan Bundy immediately, grabbing a couple of runs in the 1st inning. After two outs, Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia singled, Todd Frazier walked, and Anderson delivered a two-run RBI single. But the Orioles came right back in the top of the 2nd, cutting the lead in half with back-to-back doubles by Trey Mancini and Jonathon Schoop.

The Sox accepted the challenge in the bottom half of the 2nd. Our new home run hero, Matt Davidson, got that run right back with a long ball to center field – his 3rd straight game with a homer, including last night's grand slam. Perhaps rattled, Bundy plunked Yolmer Sanchez. Melky Cabrera then singled, and errant throws by Orioles fielders resulted in Sanchez trotting home and Melky on 3rd base. Abreu followed up with a deep fly to right, scoring Melky and giving the Sox a 5-1 lead.

Miguel Gonzalez and the Sox defense allowed the Orioles to chip away at the lead in the 4th. A couple of hits and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Washington Castillo grounded to third, but Todd Frazier threw the ball away trying to nail Mark Trumbo at home. Gonzalez then retired David Washington and J.J. Hardy, but Hyun Soo Kim singled to right, and two more runs scored. A rather messy rundown ensued with Frazier-Anderson-Sanchez, but they finally got the last out with the score 5-4 Sox.

In the 5th, Gonzalez got two quick outs, but then gave up two soft singles and walked the bases loaded. Then he served Castillo a meaty fastball right down the middle of the plate, and Castillo feasted, sending it over the center field fence for a grand slam. Poof, there went the lead. It was 8-5 Birds. Juan Minaya relieved Gonzalez in the top of the 6th, and coughed up two runs of his own.

The Sox were unable to score any more runs off of Bundy or a succession of relievers, until the 9th inning when pinch hitter Alen Hanson tallied his first major league home run, a solo dinger into the center field seats. Jose Abreu singled with 2 outs, but the Oriole's closer Brad Brach came in and got Avi Garcia to fly out and end the game, thus halting the Oriole's road losing streak.

Final game of this series against Baltimore is tomorrow at 1:10 CT, David Holmberg vs. Chris Tillman.
