Swept Out of LA

May 17 at LA Angels of Anaheim

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Walking Deceased
The Sox look like a spoof of themselves as Miguel Gonzalez, the bullpen, and our fielders let the Angels walk all over them

Short Take:   Sox used up their quota of scrappiness in last night's game and can't quite come back in 12-8 loss to Angels.

Tonight's loss was just another loss in a series of games that are seeing the Sox sink toward the cellar of the Central. If you stayed up late and watched our Sox get swept out of Los Angeles, my condolences.

Our Sox got off to a promising start in the 1st inning. Angels starter Matt Shoemaker made Leury Garcia and Yolmer Sanchez look terrible, swinging at pitches out of the zone. But Melky Cabrera doubled to the left center gap, and Abreu homered to the center field waterfall for a quick 2-0 lead.

And the Sox added on to that lead in the 2nd. Matt Davidson singled, Leury Garcia walked, and Sanchez singled, scoring Davidson. Then Melky grounded into what should have been the inning-ending double play, but shortstop Andrelton Simmons' throw to first base was high, and Shoemaker (covering first) missed it. Leury scored on the overthrow, making it 4-0 Sox.

But just as quickly as the lead racked up, it evaporated into the California night. In the bottom of the 2nd, Miguel Gonzalez struggled with location, walking four batters and driving up his pitch count. He issued the DLW to Simmons, who scored on a Ben Revere triple. After retiring C.J. Cron, Gonzalez walked Danny Espinosa, and then Martin Maldonado's unintentional bunt/fielder's choice scored Revere. Gonzalez then walked Cameron Maybin and Mike Trout, loading the bases, and Albert Pujols singled to tie the game. Gonzalez finally induced a groundout to end the inning, but at that point he'd racked up 54 pitches in two innings and coughed up the lead.

The game remained tied 4-4 until the 6th. Fate spared me from actually witnessing the Sox fall behind when severe storms rolled though the Chicago 'burbs, causing a power outage. And while my power was out, apparently Gonzalez and then Anthony Swarzak had their own version of a power outage as well. It was 8-4 Angels when my TV finally rebooted. There went Swarzak's 0.00 era.

Sigh.

The rest of the game, the Sox vascillated between showing signs of life and flatlining. Michael Ynoa relieved in the 7th and Tim Anderson and Avisail Garcia greeted him with some sloppy fielding that ultimately led to 4 more runs for the Angels, and a 12-4 deficit to overcome. However, the Sox offense chipped away at that deficit in the 8th, with RBI singles from Avisail Garcia, Tim Anderson, and Kevan Smith shrinking the gap to 12-7.

Avi Garcia doubled in yet another run in the 9th, but that would be all the team could muster, and the Angels waved their brooms goodbye.

The Sox head to Seattle for more west coast fun and another 9:10 CST start time. Dylan Covey is slated to start against Sam Gaviglio.
