Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Natural

A game that ends in a walkoff hit deserves to be paired with a movie featuring a walkoff hit.

Short Take: Yolmer Sanchez got the single, Tyler Saladino avoided the tag, and the ninth inning lived happily ever after as the Sox beat the Padres 5-4.

The Padres are pretty bad. Rebuilding? More like resurrecting. This team is a long way from Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman.

But hey, the White Sox are rebuilding too, and they've lost the last six games. In one of Jean Shepherd's great monologues, he described the Sox playing the St. Louis Browns when he was a kid. "A ballet of disaster," he called it. Watching two rebuilding teams engage each other usually does not make for exciting baseball, but tonight the Sox beat the visiting Padres 5-4, sort of like a ballet. It was an exciting walk-off hit in the ninth.

Here's how it went down: Dylan Covey, he of the 0-3 record, started tonight's contest for the Sox. Manuel Margot led off the game with a home run, making it 1-0 before a lot of folks had taken their seats. A heavy sigh went through the grandstand.

But that was all for the suntan boys, and the Sox came back in the second with a run of their own on Avi Garcia's solo homer, his sixth on the year. The Padres answered the call with a run they claimed their own in the fifth to take back the lead.

The Sox revived and got two more in the fifth to give the South Siders a 4-3 lead. The bullpen was ready so it seemed unlikely they'd let this one get away. Another Padre run in the eighth tied the game yet again, and into the swampland that is extra innings they threatened to go.

The Sox went through five pitchers but pulled it off with that shiny 5-4 score. It was the tie-score situation that brought the drama -- with Tyler Saladino at second after a sac bunt, Yolmer Sanchez strode to the plate and fired a single into center field, scoring Saladino and ending the ball game

Handshakes all around!

This is what rebuilding looks like.

Walkoffs are fun. Kinda like a movie.
