Holland Solid As Sox Split Series With Royals

May 4th at Kansas City Royals

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Mr. Holland's Opus
Mr. Holland Pitches A 6 2/3 Inning Symphony

Short Take: Sox Bats Awaken From Last Night's Nap

I confess I was not too optimistic about this Sox season and didn’t really expect to see much from them as they retool. Like many Sox fans I figured I would rather see some dismal baseball now if it meant being competitive in the near future. I’ll continue to watch my team win or lose but all things being equal I’d like my baseball to be enjoyable. Today’s game was just that; a solidly played, solidly pitched, thoroughly enjoyable baseball game as the White Sox beat the Royals 8-3 behind solid pitching from Derek Holland. The Sox leave Kansas City with a split and a tie for first place six weeks into the season.

The Sox offense that was virtually nonexistent last night came alive for 8 runs this afternoon. Jose Abreau started the Sox scoring with a 2-run bomb to deep center off KC righty Ian Kennedy. The Sox would continue to batter Kennedy for 4 1/3 innings, with Matt Davidson taking him deep in the second and Cody Asche doubling in two more in the fourth. The Sox added two more runs in the seventh with a double off the bat of the red-hot Avi Garcia and capped the scoring with one run off a sac fly in the eighth.

Derek Holland meanwhile kept the Royals bats quiet, pitching a 6 2/3 inning gem. Holland retired the first 10 batters he faced before giving up a double to Moustakas in the bottom of the fourth. Derek looked a little shaky in the top of the seventh, giving up two runs before getting pulled with two outs and a runner on third. Anthony Swarzak and David Holmberg combined for 1 2/3 innings, with Holmberg giving up a run in the eighth. Tommy Kahnle pitched an uneventful ninth to close the game with a final score of 8-3 good guys. The Sox 10-game road trip moves on to Baltimore for three games, here’s hoping they’re as enjoyable as today’s game.
