Yankees Go Homer

April 19 at New York Yankees

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Escape From New York
Glad to get out of there.

Short Take:   Sox go down without a whimper and drop series to Yankees in homer-happy 9-1 loss.

It's a rebuilding season. I guess we have to suffer through these 5th starter (aka AAA pitcher) starts sometimes. Not much to say about today's 9-1 loss to the Yankees, except that we're glad it's over.

The Yankees feasted on rookie righty Dylan Covey from the 1st inning. Leadoff hitter Brett Gardner doubled and Chase Headley followed up with a dinger to give the Yanks a quick 2-0 lead. Covey recovered to retire the next 3 hitters. But in the 2nd, 3 consecutive hits bumped it up to 3-0 New York, and a grounder to short made it 4-0. Fortunately, Jose Abreu snared a Gardner liner, and doubled off Ronald Torreyes to end the inning.

Through scattered raindrops, Covey managed to prevent the Yanks from adding on in the 3rd. But in the meantime, the Sox managed little off of Yanks starter Masahiro Tanaka.

Finally in top of the 4th, Tim Anderson nearly hit one over the left field fence, but ended up with a double. Melky Cabrera moved Anderson over with a grounder to the right side. Abreu decided to forget about the idea of bunting, and drove one to the left/center gap to score Anderson.

But that one measly run certainly posed no threat to this Yankee team. After Covey got the first two outs in the 5th, he gave up a pair of singles, followed by a homer to Starlin Castro, followed by another homer to Aaron Judge. After the 5th, the Yanks had the game well in hand with an 8-1 lead.

I may or may not have dozed off for a few innings, but I did watch one of tonight's bright spots in reliever Tommy Kahnle. In the bottom of the 7th, he made Yanks hitters look bad using a fastball that touched 100 mph. He struck out the heart of the order consisting of Chase Headley, Matt Holliday, and Jacoby Ellsbury.

I sure wish I had dozed off again instead of watching Michael Ynoa come into the 8th and promptly cough up a leadoff home run to pinch hitter Aaron Hicks. With a 9-1 Yanks lead, both teams kinda coasted to the finish, and the Sox ended their mostly successful road trip with a series loss to the Yankees.

The Sox headed home to battle Cleveland on Friday, Jose Quintana versus Corey Kluber.
