Sox Succumb to Santana

April 15 vs. the Minnesota Twins

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Little Big League
Maybe the only film featuring the Twins. And the title is a nice sobriquet for the Sox bats.

Short Take: Ervin Santana was at this level while Sox bats were at that level. Santana beat our boys 6-0 on just one hit.

What is it about the Twins? Always showing up, always jumping in front, always making us crazy. They did it again today shutting out the Sox 6-0 on a sunny afternoon in the city of flour mills.

Donald Duck was maddened by Gladstone Gander, a distant relative who always was several steps ahead no matter what Donald tried to do. Gladstone would buy a beat-up trunk at a flea market and find cash in the lining. When Donald tried to get the best of him, Gladstone always came out ahead. The result would always be one of those sputtering, inchoate rants that Donald Duck did so well.

Likewise, it seems no matter what the Sox try to do, the Twins somehow get around it or do it one better. "Piranhas," Ozzie Guillen called them. They seem to come out of nowhere and do what they need to do to win. And like Donald Duck, we often end up in a sputtering rant.

Today it was Sox's default ace, Jose Quintana, who was consumed by the piranhas. He gave up five runs in the first inning: four hits and three runs scored before the first out. He settled down, or at least the Twins did, until he was pulled with two outs in the sixth after putting runners on first and third. Michael Ynoa got the Sox and Quintana out of the inning with the Sox still in a 5-0 hole.

Ynoa stuck around trying to stop the bleeding. But the Twinkies picked up another run in the eighth. Meanwhile, in a one-hit, complete-game showpiece, Ervin Santana held the Sox to feeble pantomimes, allowing only one hit. What can you do, eh? Tip your cap, as they say.

It's remarkable that in 2002 there was serious talk about closing down the Twins. MLB was not making money and the Minnesota ball club couldn't get the state or the city to build them a new ballpark. Legal action forced the Twins to honor their lease in the dismal Baggie Dome, they went on to win the division in 2002, and did this all while in the shadow of contraction. In the years since they made nice with the city and the state and worked out a deal to share the cost of a real ballpark.

And throughout those years they've bedeviled the White Sox. Today was just another chapter in that long story.

We've seen this movie before. Twins show up, bad things happen.

Chopper is an iconic, heroic fellow, but I don't know if even he would've hit off Santana today.
