Wright's stuff!

April 9 at Detroit.

Short take:  Offense & pitching both click.

After Sunday's debacle in Kansas City, and Detroit firing their manager on Monday, Sox Fans were especially fretful about Tuesday's game against the winless Tigers.  Before anyone jumped off the ledge to join all the other dead Sox Fans in the great beyond, our beloved Pale Hose did the job and pounded lumps on Motown's hapless cats.  A convincing 8-2 victory.

Had 'em all the time, eh Sox Fans?

Young righthander Danny Wright was searching for his first win of the season.  His inconsistency has matched his age since being called up last season.  Tonight he had everything working, striking out four, walking nobody and pitching a shutout into the eighth inning.

Thanks to Wright, Jerry Manuel's overworked bullpen finally got some rest.  Damaso Marte and Bob Howry tossed 29 pitches to close out Wright's gem.  Stomach linings across Sox Fandom were thankful none of the other bullpen fire starters had a chance to bring distress.  For fretful Sox Fans, it doesn't get better than that!

Meanwhile Sox hitters had little trouble solving knuckleballer Steve Sparks.  The bottom of the batting order was smoking.   Jose Valentin tripled, Mark Johnson singled, and Royce Clayton doubled to drive in the three runs that staked the Sox to the lead in the fourth inning.  Johnson finished with five hits.  The bottom-three hitters accounted for six hits and five rbi's for our Sox!  That's quite a contrast from 2001!

The heart of the line up has had trouble getting started this season, but Frank Thomas and Magglio Ordonez were clicking tonight.  Maggs went 3 for 5, all of them doubles.  The Big Hurt had two hits and a walk, including a mammoth two-run cannon shot over the left-center field wall in the eighth.

Ah, it's good to laugh.  Heh, heh, heh.

Ken Lofton ran halfway to Canada to catch the game-ending flyout, but Sox Fans were already digging through the kitchen cabinets for celebratory nacho chips to enjoy with their victory beers.  Opening day is Friday, and the weather is shaping up to be perfect.

Best part about the ballpark improvements?  No ivy, of course.

Dan Wright

Held Detroit to three hits through seven innings.  Lost the shutout in the eighth, long after the outcome was decided.  4 K's and no walks.
