Noesi Breezy in Seattle

August 9th vs. the Seattle Mariners

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Precision Tilling
The furrows were tightly packed as runs were spaced widely by the field hands.

Short Take: In a rare Saturday extra-inning win, the Sox snap their four- game losing streak to beat Seattle 2-1.

Being on the northwest coast, games in Seattle are late-night affairs. I attribute any typos in this essay to the effects of the late hour in Chicago. Sleepless in Seattle, I suppose. But it was worth the wait as the Sox beat the Mariners 2-1 in ten innings.

Tonight was Lou Piniella night in Seattle. Big Lou was the winningest manager the Mariners ever had, but his undeniable charisma didn't help the Puget Sounders. The White Sox broke their four-game losing streak with this win tonight. We need something to celebrate and this is as good as any.

Several things were remarkable about this game. First, it was a Saturday and the Sox actually won -- this is only the fourth time all year they've won a Saturday game. Secondly, the Sox took the lead in the tenth inning and didn't let it go. It's said that even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while; the corollary to that is that even the White Sox bullpen can save a game once in a while.

Pitching was indeed the story tonight. Hector Noesi started for our boys and was efficient and effective. He got into a bind in the fourth after Gordon Beckham's two-out throwing error put Robinson Cano on first. A single and a double later, and the Starbucks sippers had a 1-0 lead. The run was unearned, but they all count.

That was it until the seventh, when the Sox tied it up on successive doubles by Jose Abreu and Alexei Ramirez. The game proceeded in this knotted condition through the regulation nine innings.

The Mariners are enjoying some level of success this season because of pitchers like starter James Paxton. He gave up the Sox' run in the seventh, after which he was replaced by a parade of quality relievers. Now, one would not use the phrase "quality relievers" to describe the White Sox bullpen, but tonight they did what they should be doing and did not allow another Seattle run.

Making the win a bit sweeter was scoring the winning run in the tenth off mister bent cap himself, Fernando Rodney. Conor Gillaspie singled in Jordan Danks to make it 2-1. Jake Petricka kept the lid on in the bottom of the tenth and the Big Lou celebration was spoiled in Seattle.

Breaking losing streaks is always fun, and winning games on Saturdays is even more so. Now I'll get some sleep.

The Futures Market:
Pick some more futures on Noesi. His pitches are moving, and in a good way.
