Knocked Away

July 23 vs. Kansas City

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Faded royal gold
We thought we'd struck it rich, but the treasure turned out to be for another suitor.

Short Take:   Jose Quintana gets caught in a pitcher's duel before a play at the plate gives the Royals the series.

With their 3-game series against the Kansas City Royals wrapping up on getaway day, the White Sox were hoping this game would end more like Monday's Christmas in July Night victory than Tuesday's Greek Heritage Night defeat. After some early offense from both teams, the game turned into a pitching duel between Jose Quintana and James Shields. They went at it for 7 innings apiece before the Royals won the battle of the bullpens by a 2-1 final.

Mike Moustakas started the 9th with a single to right off Zach Putnam before heading to second on Alcides Escobar's sac bunt. Nori Aoki then singled to center, which prompted Moustakas to head home. Adam Eaton made a perfect throw to Tyler Flowers, but the ball was jarred loose on contact to score the winning run. It hightlighted both one of the holes the Sox have and the new rule requiring catchers to give lanes to runners. We could debate both until we're blue in the face.

Quintana certainly deserved better than a no-decision, a tale he's all too familiar with. He walked only 2 hitters while striking out 3. Unfortunately for him, James "Not 35th and" Shields was equally impressive, if not more so with 7 strikeouts and just 1 walk.

The Royals quickly got to work on offense when Lorenzo Cain led off with a ground-rule double and advanced on a sac bunt by Omar Infante. He then scored on Eric Hosmer's sac fly, but was overshadowed by a diving catch from Eaton. Of course, it wasn't nearly as spectacular as a certain catch Dewayne Wise made five years to the day.

The White Sox responded in the bottom of the first when Jose Abreu doubled with two outs and came home on Adam Dunn's single. From there, the offenses were dormant for most of the remainder of the contest. Both had their chances with the bases loaded (the White Sox in the 2nd and the Royals in the 8th), but neither team could break the tie. Then, the aforementioned events unfolded in the 9th to put a stamp on this homestand. As a bonus for the visitors, All-Star closer Greg Holland got the easy save.

Our boys will now head north to take on the Minnesota Twins and attempt to stay out of the cellar. Yours truly will be attending the back half of this four-game set at Target Field. Thursday's opener will put Hector Noesi against Phil Hughes. You can watch at 7:10 on Comcast SportsNet.

Buy for the front end of the rotation, but sell for those guys they throw the ball to.
