Sox Lose Battle of the Bad Bullpens

July 20 vs Houston Astros

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Dormancy prevails.

Short Take: Sox hitters take advantage on Astros gaffs in a seesaw game, until Webb gives up 4 runs late and Sox can't come back; Sox lose 11- 7.

Boooo….No Sweep Home for the White Sox today. After winning the first two games of the series, the Sox lost to the Astros in a seesaw game in which the Sox bullpen finally waved the white flag and surrendered.

Not that this game is all the bullpen's fault. Sox starter John Danks did not have his best today. He gave up two home runs that accounted for 4 runs, including one to the diminutive Jose Altuve. Danks exited the game trailing 6-3 in the 5th inning, after throwing 78 pitches and giving up 12 hits.

Danks might not have been sharp, but the Astros attempted to hand the White Sox the broom. Five of the 7 runs scored by the White Sox were the result of Astros fielding or throwing errors, mostly in the bottom of the 6th inning when the Sox were able to tie the game 7-7.

But that didn't last long. In the top of the 7th, reliever Daniel Webb quickly gave up 3 doubles and 4 runs to the Astros. After that, the Sox just didn't seem to have the energy to battle back. Sox hitters were shut down in the last three innings mostly in order.

Of note:

  • Called up from Charlotte yesterday, Taylor Thompson had a nice MLB debut. He went 1 2/3 innings, gave up 1 hit, no runs, and struck out 2.
  • @ckamka tweeted these disturbing 2014 stats for John Danks:
    • Danks in 2 games against Houston: 14.00 ERA, 22 hits, 14 ER in 9 IP, 5 HR.
    • Danks in 10 games started between these two Houston starts: 2.69 ERA, 61 hits, 20 ER in 67 IP, 6 HR.

I can't think of anything original and witty to say about this game, so I'll just call it another boring loss to a bad baseball team.

The Sox return to the Cell to face the Royals tomorrow at 7:10 CST.

WSI's
The Futures Market:
 Still recommend selling the bullpen.
