Gillaspie's Blast Buries Boston

July 8, at Boston

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Good night for the bats
Sox tagged Boston pitching for 12 hits, 8 for extra bases

Short Take: Gillaspie blasts 2-run homer with 2 outs in 6th inning to push Sox past defending champs

There is little, if anything, more frustrating in baseball than watching your team score a couple runs only to turn around and give them right back the very next inning. Maybe this is just my biased perception, but it feels like the Sox have been on the wrong side of this equation well more often than not these past few years. On Tuesday night, at Fenway Park, the Sox turned the tables as Conor Gillaspie lifted the South Siders by wrapping his second homer of the season around Pesky’s Pole an inning following a 3-run Red Sox rally, as the White Sox beat the defending champs for the second night in a row, 8-3.

With the Sox recent string of pitching, the 2-run lead they staked John Danks to in the 2nd inning could have been enough but unfortunately, John didn’t have his A-game tonight. He danced in and out of trouble for most of the evening, loading the bases in the first and fourth innings before the levy finally broke in the 5th. With the score at that point 3-0 thanks to a 2-out RBI single by Alejandro De Aza in the 4th, the Red Sox battered Danks for 5 hits in the frame, 3 of them for extra bases, scoring 3 runs and leaving quite a bit more damage unrealized as Danks regrouped to strike out David Ross and Stephen Drew to end the inning with runners on first and second.

The Sox, however, struck back quickly, as Jose Abreu (who was 3-4 on the night with a pair of doubles and an intentional walk) lead off the inning with a single and two batters later came around to score on Gillaspie’s homer that stayed just inside of Fenway’s famous right field foul pole. The lead would be enough to earn Danks the win, as he retired the first two batters in the 6th inning before exiting for the night. Maybe a cheap win for a guy who allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks in not even 6 innings of work, but Danks’ career is littered with unrealized wins thanks to years of ineffective offensive support, so it is what it is.

From there on out the Sox removed any and all drama, adding three more runs in the 9th on a triple by De Aza, doubles by Gordon Beckham and Paul Konerko. Ronnie Belisario recorded 7 outs of the 8 batters he faced and Eric Surkamp worked a perfect ninth to wrap this one up.

The win is the Sox’s 3rd in a row and 8th of their last 11 games played since hitting the low-water mark of the season, 8 games under .500 on June 26. This 4-game battle of the Soxes continues tomorrow night as Chris Sale makes his final pitch for the AL All Star Game in the heart of the East Coast media hype machine against Rubby De La Rosa. First pitch will be at 6:10 PM and the game will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Net.
