Not Easy, but Noesi and Bullpen Get It Done

July 6 vs. Seattle Mariners

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Prognosis uncertain, but they removed some of the excess fertilizer that was piled on yesterday, and watered gently. We'll see.

Short Take: Wild pitch offense helps Sox take series with 1-0 victory over the Mariners.

Let it out, Sox fans. That deep breath that you've been holding since the 7th inning…that's right, it's ok. Let it out. It's a good day to be a White Sox fan.

Hector Noesi took the mound today against the team that he started the season with, and perhaps he felt he had something to prove to the Mariners. Noesi pitched 6-2/3 scoreless innings with 5 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts to lead the Sox over the Mariners 1-0.

It certainly was no Sox offense juggernaut that capitalized against Mariners starter Taijuan Walker. The rookie righty had difficulty finding the plate; he walked 5 Sox hitters over 4 innings. But Walker only gave up 2 hits, and the only run he gave up was on a wild pitch on ball 4 to Adam Dunn, allowing Conor Gillaspie to score from third. Walker only lasted 4 innings, but the Sox could not make any headway against the Mariners bullpen. Their relievers held the Sox hitless for 4 innings.

Speaking of bullpens…yesterday's White Sox bullpen implosion forced a 14-inning game that the Sox eventually crumpled into a ball and threw into the loss column. So today, Sox fans hung on with their fingernails to the edge of sanity when the bullpen took over the game in the 7th inning. Eric Surkamp came in with runners on first and third and 2 outs, promptly walked Saunders, and then nearly beheaded Robinson Cano with his first pitch. And I almost lost my head at that point.

But today is a new day, and Surkamp got Cano to fly out and end the threat. Then Jake Petricka, supported by some stellar defense in the 8th inning, pitched 2 innings of scoreless ball for a save. A save and a win! Yes!!

Of note:

  • Conor Gillapsie was hit by a pitch on the knee in the 5th inning and was removed from the game. He has a bruised knee and is day to day as of press time.
  • Adrian Nieto got the start at catcher. He was 1 for 3 with a double, hit the ball hard for outs several times, and made a nice play on a bunt by Endy Chavez.
  • The 8th inning featured successive ESPN-top-10-quality plays by Adam Eaton (diving catch of a liner), Gordon Beckham (nice play on grounder hit deep), and Jose Abreu (hit the ground after knocking down a hard grounder destined for right field, but still managed to throw to Petricka at first for the out).
  • My dog, wearing his spiffy White Sox collar, was the #chicagofanphoto of the day (#10secondsofdoggiefame).

The Sox head to Boston for a four-game series against the Other Sox. On Monday, Scott Carroll (2-5) faces Clay Bucholz (3-4) at 6:10 pm on WCIU.

Hold...onto your butts, particularly if the bullpen is called upon.
