Quintana Outduels Buehrle, Sox Win 3rd Straight

June 29 at Toronto Blue Jays

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Might that be a peek of green growth from under the wilted leaves?

Short Take: Jose Quintana and the bullpen shut out the Jays 4-0; Mark Buehrle is good, but not good enough as Sox finish ugly road trip on a good note

The White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays and Mark Buehrle 4-0 today, which is…wait for it…their 3rd win in a row! As Lou Brown says, "That's called a winning streak."

For this biased White Sox fan, beating Mark Buehrle while he's in a Blue Jays uniform is bittersweet. He was my favorite Sox pitcher for many years, and I was mad when the Sox didn't offer him a contract after the 2011 season. So Buehrle went to Miami, and then after the Marlins team fiasco, ended up in Toronto. Mark is pitching well this season – going into this game, he was 10- 4. And I'd still like to see him again on the White Sox someday.

All that said, I want my White Sox to win every game. I got a little bit of everything I might want today - Buehrle was pretty damn good, but Jose Quintana was even better and led the Sox to the win.

In 7 innings, Quintana gave up 3 hits, 0 ER, 7 Ks, and 2 walks, and for the most part kept the ball in the infield. The Jays never really threatened to score, except in the 6th inning, when a hit, a walk, and a wild pitch got a runner on 3rd with 2 outs. But Quintana got the dangerous Jose Bautista to ground to short, ending the inning.

The White Sox scattered 6 hits over 8 innings of Buehrle. In the 3rd, a Gordon Beckham double and Jose Abreu single (which extended Jose's hitting streak to 14 games) combined to score the first run for the Sox. In the 4th inning, Moises Sierra hit a solo home run to up the score to 2-0.

With Quintana's strong outing, the Sox really didn't need any more runs. Former White Sox pitcher Sergio Santos gave us a pair in the 9th anyway, maybe for old times' sake. After Paul Konerko walked and Sierra doubled (he was 2/4 today), Tyler Flowers singled on the first pitch for two RBIs.

Our much-maligned White Sox bullpen was nearly flawless – Eric Surkamp and Jacob Petricka combined for an inning each of scoreless baseball. Yay! Who needs a designated closer anyway – let's just close out all games in non-save situations, eh, boys?

It was an uplifting finish to a rather wretched road trip. The Sox now head home to face the Angels on Monday at 7:10 pm; Hector Noesi faces Garrett Richards. Let's see if they can keep the winning streak alive.

WSI's
The Futures Market:
Buy stock in the bullpen, but only if Belasario futures are limited to the 7th and 8th innings.
