Giant Slayers

June 17, vs. San Francisco

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Bouncing back in the summer heat
Maybe the kids just needed a day off to enjoy the sunshine?

Short Take: Beckham and the Tank go long and Danks pitches well again in 8-2 rout of NL's best

Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo lead the way with a two-run homer each as the recently sluggish White Sox offense erupted for 8 runs. This was all in support of John Danks, who pitched another quality start, en route to his 6th win of the season as the Sox topped the Giants Tuesday night, 8-2, to snap a season-long 4-game losing streak.

Given that the Sox had been buried early all weekend in a series sweep at the hands of the Royals, when the Giants jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with runs in the 1st and 3rd innings, you could excuse even the most blindly loyal and positive South Sider for losing hope quickly. Danks, however, settled in, retiring 8 of the next 9 batters he saw and only allowing 1 runner to advance into scoring position the rest of the evening. He left midway through the 7th inning, turning over a comfortable lead to the bullpen trio of Javy Guerra, Zach Putnam, and Daniel Webb who ensured his quality outing not go to waste, effortlessly holding the Giants in place.

Offensively, after scoring a total of 6 runs in 3 losses to Kansas City, the Sox bats burst to life. Though Giants starter Matt Cain got off to a quick start; allowing only 1 hit (a 2-out single) and striking out 2 his first time through the lineup, the Sox quickly got to him the 2nd time through. After two quick outs opened the third inning, Adam Eaton singled and Gordon Beckham launched a 2-run bomb to left-center field to tie the score at 2. In the fourth, with the bases loaded, Tyler Flowers worked a full-count walk to bring home Jose Abreu and give the Sox their first lead since Wednesday. Adam Eaton followed with an RBI infield single and the Sox tacked another run on the board thanks to a throwing error on Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford.

The Sox finally chased Cain in the 5th inning, another 3-run frame punctuated by Dayan Viciedo’s 6th home run of the season that brought the scoring to a close.

After getting steamrolled by baseball’s hottest team this past weekend, it is a nice change of pace to be catching a team in the middle of a down spell. Though the Giants have the National League’s best record, but have now lost 8 of their last 9 games. The Sox and Giants will wrap up this brief two-game interleague series tomorrow afternoon at the Cell. Expect an old time pitcher’s duel when Chris Sale goes for his 7th win against Tim Hudson, the veteran righty enjoying a late-season renaissance in San Francisco, who leads all of baseball with a 1.81 ERA. Game time is 1:10 PM and the game will be broadcast on WGN.

The Futures Market:
Still need to recover from this weekend's losses, but nice to stop the bleeding against a legit World Series contender
