WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

0-10 For Saturday, Even With Sale

June 8th vs. the Anaheim or LA or Wherever Angels

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Locusts
A promising crop was decimated by an infestation of singles and a crushing grand slam.

Short Take:   Chris Sale took a 5-0 lead into the eighth but gave up five to tie the game, and Jake Petricka lost it for a final of 6-5 against the Angels.

I don't buy into curses, jinxes, astrology, or the Bermuda triangle. But there's something about Saturdays that follows the White Sox like a noxious cloud. Last week I wrote "we lost again" in multiple languages because I got tired of writing the same thing nine times in a row. This week I'll keep it simple: the White Sox lost to the Angels, 6-5, making them 0-10 on Saturdays in 2014.

Check this out: Chris Sale was on the mound for the Sox tonight. Hitting was productive, providing a 5-0 lead into the eighth inning. Sale goes into the eighth and before any outs are recorded he gives up a double, a single (scoring one), an error that allows another runner, another single, and a grand slam to Mike Trout to tie the game, 5-5. Sale exits and Jake Petricka comes in, giving up three singles to score the lead run for Angels.

The Sox ninth was remarkable only because it was so quick. Anaheim closer Ernesto Frieri dispatched Alejandro De Aza, Tyler Flowers, and Adam Eaton without breaking a sweat.

And that was that.

I had begun drafting a celebratory essay congratulating myself for holding out through nine Saturday losses and thanking Sale for breaking the sixth-day skid. But that piece was figuratively crumpled and thrown out, and you're stuck with this.

Glimmers of good news: De Aza, who's been one of my lighning rods for the Sox' poor performance, hit two doubles tonight with two RBIs. Tyler Flowers, another voodoo doll of mine from last season, laid down a sacrifice bunt that set up a two-run inning. Adam Dunn hit a solo home run. These were principal contributors to the five runs the Sox scored tonight.

Then the bad news: Chris Sale's meltdown in the eighth inning. Like the Titanic, we thought he was unsinkable, especially with a five-run lead. But he hit an iceberg named Trout after giving up enough hits to fill the bases. Whether he should have still been out there in the eighth is a hot stove question that will haunt us and Robin Ventura for a good long time.

Also of concern was Jose Abreu's four srikeouts. He looked lost up there, flailing at bad pitches. Hope this is simply an acute condition that passes quickly.

Well, Ken Harrelson says teams lose 60 and win 60, and it's what they do with the other 42 that makes the difference. There are 26 Saturdays in this year's schedule -- if the Sox lose them all, then I suppose it's what they do with the remaining 16 that makes the difference. That's a slim margin for error.

Alejandro De Aza

Two doubles and two RBIs tonight. A rare good night for ADA, but it was all for naught.
