Rienzo, San Diego -- No Go

May 31st vs. the San Diego Padres

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Puny kernels, withered fruit.
The yield was poor in the field today. Pickings were slim on the new growth.

Short Take:The Sox looked more like 2013 than the 1983 uniforms would suggest, losing 4-2 to the Padres.

The San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on a sunny Saturday in Chicago.

That flat, unadorned statement provides both the result of today's contest and a feel for the langourous way the game progressed. It took three hours and sixteen minutes to play this game. It took the Sox pitchers 162 pitches to get through it, while the San Diegans needed only 137.

More fun with numbers: this is the ninth Saturday game of the 2014 season, and the White Sox have gone 0-9. I have a vested interest in this because of my unique perch as your Saturday TBGR correspondent. I'm running out of ways to say "they lost," so let's try saying it in different ways.

Perdimos de nuevo would be "we lost again" in Spanish, but that's too easy. How about in French? Nous avons perdu nouveau sounds romantic; takes off some of the sting. The Welsh are a hearty lot -- they might say rydym yn colli eto, but don't ask me to pronounce it. Wir wieder verloren would be declared by a no-nonsense German fan. But since this is the land of e pluribus unum, we should don our togas and declare perit nobis. Et tu, Rienzo?

Speaking of Rienzo, he was not sharp today. If dull is the inverse of sharp, maybe that's a better way to put it. He only went 3-1/3 innings and took 80 pitches to do it. Three earned runs on seven hits and two walks. He wasn't fooling anybody, including the home plate umpire.

Scott Carroll pitched 3-2/3rds and gave up a run and three walks of his own. Daniel Webb pitched an inning and 2/3rds and allowed two more walks. All of that non-contact activity made for a tedious afternoon.

Meanwhile, SD starter Tyson Ross had the Sox hitters stupified, which is often not difficult to do. Our locals spread around five hits and got a couple of runs but couldn't put together the proverbial big inning. They reap what they sow on days like this, which isn't much.

San Diego has a bullpen that actually throws strikes. Nick Vincent, Joaquin Benoit, and Huston Street eached pitched an inning and looked as though they were simply connecting dots. "Nothing to it, folks," they seemed to say. "Have a pleasant afternoon. We're done here."

And they were. We can only hope that when Jose Abreu comes back we'll have something else to talk about besides why the Sox can't win on a Saturday. Until then we can lean on our dignified Latin forbears who advised us to carpe diem. And I'll seize that day, remembering that they also said caveat emptor. They were no fools.

The Futures Market:
I'm still holding on Sox futures. The present is beginning to look too much like the past.

Two hits and looked good in the field. An average day counts as the best we've got.
