Astros Say Thanks to Danks for the Series Win

May 18 at Houston Astros

Daily Sox Crop Report: Crops? What crops? Can't see 'em for all the weeds right now.

Short Take: John Danks and friends are flatter than an armadillo under an 18-wheeler; Sox lose 8-2

Perhaps it was just a foreboding of today's game when we found out Jose Abreu had been placed on the 15-day DL with ankle problems. Perhaps the collective groan from White Sox fans everywhere caused a disturbance in the force, felt by the Sox in Houston.

Or perhaps the Sox just didn't eat their Wheaties today, because despite the return of Adam Eaton to the lineup, the energy was missing from the Sox this game, and the Sox lost the game 8-2 and the series to the Houston Astros.

I guess we could have predicted the outcome. After all, the Sox were facing another young starter they haven't seen before. Against Brad Peacock, the Sox mustered up just 4 hits - 3 of them by catcher Adrian Nieto.

The Sox blew their biggest opportunity in the 3rd inning when they loaded the bases with no outs, but Gordon Beckham hit a nubber to Peacock for a gift-wrapped double play. That was promptly followed by a Conor Gillaspie flyout to center to end the threat.

On the other hand, the Astros had no problems smacking Sox starter John Danks around. The Astros got 10 hits off him, including 3 homers. Danks was driving the struggle bus today. He was constantly behind in the count, and finally was taken out in the bottom of the 5th inning after throwing 107 pitches and giving up 8 runs.

The Sox defense – or lack of it – didn't help Danks. Playing left field today, Alejandro De Aza boosted his candidacy for WSI's "Player Most Likely to Have His Luggage Packed for Him and Placed by the Door" by muffing a ground ball in the 2nd inning, allowing an extra to run to score. In the same inning, catcher Nieto's throw to third base, attempting to catch stealing Jonathon Villar, airmailed Gillaspie into left field and allowed another run to score.

And so John Danks continues to toil, and the Sox continue to wallow in slightly-less-than mediocrity.

Today's Sox highlights:

  • Adrian Nieto was 3/3 with a double.
  • Webb and Lindstrom did their jobs holding the Astros to 0 runs.

Today's Sox lowlights:

  • Pretty much everything else about this game, including Adam Dunn's golden sombrero.

The Sox head to Kansas City for a 3-game set against the Royals. Scott Carroll is scheduled to face Jason Vargas. Game time is 7:10 pm CST.

The Futures Market:
Buy...I mean, bye-bye, Jose Abreu. It will be boring without you for two weeks.
