Snakebit

May 10th vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Vermin control needed.
The crop-watchers are going to need to have reptilian varmints cleared out of the field. Especially those that rattle.

Short Take: The Sox couldn't scale the Diamondbacks tonight, losing 4-3.

Crotalus atrox, commonly known as the Western diamondback, is a pit viper. If relies on heat-sensing pits behind its nostrils to detect subtle changes in temperature to detect prey.

On Saturday night, Crotalus atrox's namesakes apparently detected similar changes in the temperature of their prey as they made their move to defeat the White Sox 4-3.

The origin of the Arizona Diamondbacks' name is curious. The creature whose name they appropriated is a venomous snake, though it was the least-weird option. It was chosen in a local poll over Coyotes (scavengers), Scorpions (creepy), Rattlers (scary), and Phoenix (Arizona Phoenix is geographically backwards). But Diamondbacks they are, and the Sox got bit tonight.

Or maybe the Sox bit themselves. Jose Quintana started tonight's contest, and though he's been steady, tonight his battery was weak. Six innings, 109 pitches, only one walk. That suggests he went too deep in too many counts and let the pit vipers sense the subtle temperature change of his pitches. In the top of the fifth the Db's (or should it be Ca's?) knocked him around with two singles, two doubles, and an intentional walk, adding up to a 3-0 lead for the desert crawlers.

Meanwhile, the White Sox seemed flummoxed by Arizona starter Wade Miley. He could throw strikes and put them where he wanted, and the Sox couldn't seem to hit them. Apparently it was more high-resolution temperature detection of the Sox hitters' anxiety.

That is except for mon capitaine Paul Konerko, who started at first base tonight so that phenom/franchise/showpiece Jose Abreu could rest his sore ankle at DH. After Dayan Viciedo singled in the fifth, Paulie launched an 0-1 fastball into the left-field seats for his first homer of 2014. 3-2 now, and it's not out of reach.

The other guys picked up a run in the seventh when Zach Putnam came in relief of Quintana and gave up a double to Chris Owings, who was out at third trying to stretch it into a three-bagger. But then Putnam handed Arizona a walk, a single, another walk, and another single, bringing in another run to make it 4-2 for the venomous ones.

The Sox got back on their feet in the ninth, as Conor Gillaspie got a leadoff, pinch-hit single off D-Back closer Addison Reed. As he'd done so many times for us, Reed made it entertaining by wild-pitching Gillaspie to second and giving up an RBI single to Alexei Ramirez. 4-3 at this point, and with two outs and the tying run on second after Ramirez stole it, Konerko was back. But alas, he hit a grounder to second to end the game and give Reed his 11th save.

Our heroes are 1-1 in this series with the rubber game tomorrow. Herpetology, the study of snakes, is an academic pursuit toward which the Sox should devote some time before they're bit again.

WSI's
The Futures Market:
Futures, like Conor Gillaspie, still look good. I'd still hold on the pitching, though.

Paul Konerko

Two- thirds of the scoring tonight with his two-run homer. The Captain's still got it when he's got a chance to get it.
