Tanks a Lot! Sox Squeak by Tribe

May 4 at Cleveland Indians

Daily Sox Crop Report: Mostly dormant crops these days, but a single Tankershower saves 'em from death by drought

Short Take: Cap-tipping-worthy performance by Corey Kluber all for naught after Dayan Viciedo launches a 3-run HR in the top of the 9th; Sox beat Indians 4- 3

There's one thing that really pisses me off about these 2014 White Sox: I just hate it when I think can see how the game is going, so I write the whole dang TBGR before the end of the game - a whining, negative, angry game report that accuses opposing teams of placing hexes on the Sox bats, and calls for firing almost everyone and trading the rest for a bag of balls.

And then, because these guys DON'T QUIT, I have to scrap the whole damn thing in the 9th inning.

Gosh, I hate it when that happens. (Yes, this IS teal).

Indians starter Corey Kluber essentially shut down the White Sox offense in 8 innings, and left the game with a 3-1 lead. But as you know, this game is 9 innings, and the Sox got to Indians closer John Axford, scoring just enough to win 4-3.

We just haven't done enough cap-tipping recently, so let's do some for Corey Kluber. The Indians starter pitched one of the best games of his career. Kluber spotted his pitches well and fooled nearly everyone, striking out 13 total (a career high), including a stretch of 7 strikeouts in a row. The Sox scattered just 3 hits in 8 innings off of Kluber.

Sox starter Andre Rienzo was, well, not terrible. Rienzo appeared to periodically have some control issues, allowing Indians hitters to be patient. George Kottaras, playing in his first MLB game of the season and batting 9th, was well rewarded with his patience. Twice, after working the count, Kottaras homered when Rienzo had to throw him get-me-over pitches.

Rienzo was done after 4.2 innings, allowing 7 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 4 walks, 2 strikeouts and 2 homeruns. The much- maligned but recently improving Sox bullpen stepped in and suppressed the Indians. Zach Putnam, Ronald Belisario, and Daniel Webb each pitched a scoreless inning, but the Sox trailed 3-1 going into the 9th.

So Tank heavens for Dayan Viciedo, and also for closer Axford, who had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. After Axford walked Beckham on four pitches, he struck out Jose Abreu (who up to then had the Sox's only RBI – a homer in the 1st inning). But Axford walked Dunn, and then Tank took a belt high fastball on the outer part of the plate and smoked it right out of the park. The Sox led 4-3, and Matt Lindstrom came in for and got the save.

Thus the Sox broke their losing streak at 4, and also snapped a streak of 8 consecutive losses at Progressive Field.

So did Kluber have the best start of his life, or did the Sox allow him have the best start of his life? We'll never really know. But I sure miss those days in April of White Sox offensive prowess. I believe the loss of spark plug Adam Eaton at the top of the order is looming large these days, and a general bat-cooling seems to be taking place - what a difference a few weeks make.

The White Sox head back to Chicago for a subway series against the Cubs. First game of the set is at Wrigley Field Monday at 7:05 pm. Jose Quintana (1-2) faces Jeff Samardzija (0-3).

WSI's
The Futures Market:
Injuries and cooled Sox bats make further emotional investment in this team speculative at best.
