Dodging the 100-Loss Bullet

September 28th vs. the Kansas City Royals

Today's Game Rating:
4 STARS
Too much suspense in a story that shouldn't have had any. A solid ending anyway.

Short Take:The Sox edged past the Royals 6-5, avoiding an ignominious 100-loss season.

I remember telling a friend as the season began that I really liked the way this team looked. The starting rotation was strong, the bullpen looked solid, and the White Sox were coming off a contending season in 2012. The trend pointed up.

Now it's come to this. We're at the final weekend of the season and the only thing we have to celebrate is that the Sox have avoided losing 100 games. I shake my head as I write this. The September result is so far below my April expectation that I have vertigo.

The Sox did win tonight, beating the Royals 6-5 on Fireworks Night. The patrons got their money's worth, as the Sox hit four homers that provided a pyrotechnic opening act. The Royals are tough customers though, and kept coming back like experienced poker players: I'll see your solo home run and raise you an extra baserunner.

Here's a summary of tonight's minuet: we score, they score. In the bottom of the second, Marcus Semien and Jordan Danks hit back-to-back solo homers off Yordano Ventura (no relation). In the third, Gordon Beckham led off with a single and two outs later Adam Dunn hit his 34th homer to make it 4-0. Skyrockets in flight!

The cowtown crowd picked up their first run in the fifth when Mike Moustakas hit a solo homer off Sox starter Erik Johnson. Two more runs showed up in the sixth when Billy Butler hit a two-run shot to left, making it 4-3. Johnson was shown to his seat at that point, having pitched enough to earn a win if our heroes could hold on.

Two more runs for the Bridgeport Bashers in the seventh, as Conor Gillaspie brought himself and Beckham around on a line drive into the Bullpen Sports Bar. 6-3...no problem, right?

Not necessarily. The barbeque-sauce boys got two more in the eighth on yet another home run, this time by Salvador Perez. 6-5 in the eighth, and weary Sox fans sighed in resignation, expecting another collapse.

But it wasn't to be. Addison Reed got his 40th save in the ninth, scaring the hell out of us by walking tying-run Alex Gordon after two outs and wandering around the strike zone. But Reed got the K for the third out, and there were relieved handshakes all around.

Relieved, because not only did the Sox hold on to win tonight, they also guaranteed that they will not lose 100 games this year. Cold comfort, eh? But it's all we've got to work with.

Speaking of relieved, it was announced that hitting coach Jeff Manto was "relieved" of his duties. Was this year his fault? Probably not, but coaches exist to be sacrifices on the altar of players' nonperformance. It's been obvious that this year's deflated balloon is largely a result of the players' softheadedness. Running into outs on the bases, forgetting to tag up, missing the cutoff man, swinging for the fences regardless of the situation, not knowing how to bunt, fighting with Houston for the lead in errors...please, make it stop.

And so it does tomorrow, which is Fan Appreciation Day. I would hope they appreciate us. Like faithful puppies we keep coming back, though we do have a habit of chewing up the furniture. Watching games this year I often wonder what these guys are thinking. Are they thinking at all? Maybe they're like the scarecrow in "The Wizard of Oz" who wishes he had a brain.

I can imagine the jaunty tune below sung in the clubhouse. Or maybe I hope they sing it when they realize they need help in the baseball-smarts department. With apologies to Arlen and Harburg, this can be sung to the tune of "If I Only Had a Brain."

I could while away the hours
Cursing higher powers,
And watch our record fall.
But instead of just a-screamin'
My time is spent a-dreamin'
Of a team that can play ball.

As they end another inning
They have no prayer of winning;
They'll take another fall.
I'm once again reminded
That these guys are simple-minded
When it comes to playing ball.

Oh why, oh Sox oh why
Are you afraid to score?
Stranded runners pile up more and more.
If you can't hit --
Well, there's the door.

As fans we pay admission,
And find ourselves a-wishin'
Rick Hahn makes one more call.
And while we all are whining
We hope that he's been signing
Other guys who can play ball.

You know, they say that somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue. And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. See you next year.

WSI's
Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
A Win! Thumbs Up! "Well Stoney, after a year like this I don't know if I'll make it to my eighth decade in baseball." "Yeah, you will, Hawk. The PGA won't take you back."
